Luxury Car Crash on Mumbai Coastal Road

In the early hours of Sunday, a high-end car registered to a 75-year-old Agripada businessman was involved in an accident inside the Coastal Road tunnel in South Mumbai. The car was allegedly being driven by the businessman’s 17-year-old friend, accompanied by the businessman’s 18-year-old granddaughter.

The collision left one person in the other vehicle injured, who was taken to a nearby hospital and later discharged after treatment. The D B Marg police have registered a case against the businessman, his granddaughter, and the minor for their roles in the incident.

How the Accident Happened

Police reports say the accident occurred around 2 am on Sunday. According to authorities, the trio was traveling towards South Mumbai, planning to visit the Gateway of India via the Coastal Road.

A police officer explained that the minor claimed the accident happened after a tyre burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The car then collided with another vehicle in the tunnel, which had three occupants. One person in that car sustained injuries.

Driver and Vehicle Details

The 18-year-old granddaughter of the businessman held a valid driving license, while the 17-year-old boy behind the wheel is underage. Authorities have collected the minor’s blood samples to verify whether alcohol was involved. Preliminary investigation suggests the boy was not intoxicated at the time of the accident.

To verify the minor’s claim about the tyre burst, police have called RTO officials to examine the vehicle. Investigators have also seized the luxury car for further examination.

Legal Actions and Investigation

Police have filed a case against the car owner, his granddaughter, and the minor under applicable traffic and juvenile laws. The case is being investigated thoroughly to determine responsibility and negligence.

Authorities are focusing on multiple aspects, including:

  • The cause of the crash, whether mechanical failure or driver error
  • Accountability of the car owner for allowing an underage person to drive
  • Ensuring that road safety laws were not violated

Police emphasized that underage driving in Mumbai, especially in high-powered luxury vehicles, poses serious safety risks to drivers and other road users.

Safety Concerns and Public Reaction

This accident has highlighted growing concerns over underage driving and reckless use of luxury vehicles in Mumbai. Experts say that minors driving high-end cars on busy city roads can lead to severe accidents, endangering themselves and others.

Local residents and commuters have expressed concern over the incident, stressing that stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns are necessary to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Next Steps in the Investigation

Police are waiting for the results of the blood test of the minor driver and the RTO examination of the car. Depending on the findings, further legal action may be taken against the driver, the car owner, and anyone else found negligent.

Authorities have also reminded citizens that underage driving is illegal and can result in serious penalties for both the driver and the vehicle owner.

Lessons and Precautions

Incidents like this underline the importance of:

  • Strict adherence to traffic laws
  • Ensuring that only licensed drivers operate vehicles
  • Parental responsibility when allowing teenagers access to high-powered cars
  • Regular vehicle maintenance to prevent mechanical failures such as tyre bursts

Experts also advise that luxury car owners take extra precautions when lending their vehicles to young or inexperienced drivers, particularly in high-traffic areas like Mumbai.

The Coastal Road crash serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of underage driving, vehicle ownership responsibilities, and road safety. While no fatalities occurred in this incident, it could have easily resulted in a much more serious tragedy.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on establishing accountability and preventing such incidents in the future. The case also highlights the broader concern of urban road safety, especially for high-speed and luxury vehicles in Mumbai’s busy tunnels and roads.
