MUMBAI, September 5, 2026: Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai and its suburbs witnessed enthusiastic participation on Saturday, but the festivities also resulted in injuries to 22 Govindas, young participants who form multi-tiered human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd. Civic officials said the injured participants received medical treatment, with reports initially stating that 21 had been discharged and the remaining participant also subsequently receiving treatment and being discharged.

Dahi Handi is one of the most popular traditions associated with Janmashtami, the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. During the celebrations, Govinda groups compete to build human pyramids several levels high and reach a handi suspended above the ground. The activity attracts large crowds, music, dancing and celebrations across neighbourhoods in Mumbai.

This year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made extensive medical arrangements ahead of the festivities. More than 100 beds were kept ready across civic-run hospitals, including facilities in the island city and suburbs, to provide immediate treatment to participants who might sustain injuries. Civic hospitals were also instructed to provide free treatment to injured Govindas.

Despite these precautions, falls during pyramid formations resulted in injuries at multiple locations. Participants can suffer injuries when human pyramids lose balance, particularly during the final stages when the topmost Govinda attempts to reach and break the suspended pot. The physical demands of balancing several people on top of one another make safety arrangements particularly important during the event.

According to civic officials, 20 of the injured participants were admitted to hospitals in Mumbai’s island city, and all were discharged after receiving treatment. Across Mumbai and its surrounding areas, the total number of injured Govindas was reported as 22. The injuries were treated at hospitals prepared to handle festival-related emergencies.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of safety during Dahi Handi celebrations. Authorities had increased security and medical preparedness across the city, anticipating large crowds and possible accidents. Medical teams remained available to respond quickly when participants were injured.

The festival continued across Mumbai with large numbers of Govinda Pathaks taking part in organised events. Human pyramids were formed at various locations as spectators gathered to watch the traditional spectacle. The combination of competition, cultural tradition and community participation has made Dahi Handi a major annual event in Maharashtra.

Safety has increasingly become an important part of the festival, particularly because injuries can occur when participants fall from considerable heights. Organisers and civic authorities have therefore focused on medical preparedness and emergency response alongside crowd management.

The Mumbai injuries occurred as Dahi Handi celebrations were being held across Maharashtra. While the injuries reported in Mumbai were treated without any fatalities, another incident in Pune during the festivities resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman after a temporary iron structure collapsed while it was being dismantled. Police registered an accidental death report and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

For Mumbai, however, the immediate outcome was relatively reassuring: the 22 injured Govindas received medical attention, and officials reported that they were discharged following treatment. The episode nevertheless underscores the need for careful planning, trained participants, adequate safety measures and rapid medical assistance during one of the city’s most energetic annual celebrations.
