In a dramatic escalation of political tensions ahead of Maharashtra’s upcoming local body elections, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) leader Nilesh Rane has made the sensational claim that a sting operation was conducted at the residence of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, from where it claims to have recovered a bag filled with cash. The accusation has triggered a fresh political storm in Mumbai, sharpening the rivalry among parties eyeing control of municipal corporations and district councils.
According to Rane, the incident took place earlier this week when unidentified individuals reportedly conducted a covert operation at a BJP functionary’s home. The alleged footage, which Rane claims will be made public “at the right time,” supposedly shows a huge amount of money being transported in connection with poll preparations. While Rane stopped short of naming senior BJP leaders, he insisted that the cash seizure clearly indicates attempts to influence the upcoming elections through illicit financial channels.
The BJP, however, has rejected these allegations as unfounded, fabricated, and politically motivated. A senior BJP spokesperson countered that the opposition was deliberately manufacturing controversies to gain media visibility, now that civic polls are expected to be one of the closest battles in years. The party has demanded that Rane either produce the alleged footage immediately or withdraw his statements and apologize publicly.
Known for his confrontational political style, Rane reiterated the charges on social media and in subsequent press interactions. He said the sting operation was conducted by “concerned citizens” who wanted to expose malpractices in the poll process. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “More such exposes will come out soon. The people of Maharashtra deserve to know how some parties are trying to buy elections rather than win them fairly.”
Political analysts believe the incident reflects the mounting pressure among major alliances as they prepare for elections to municipal bodies like the BMC, Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, among others. These elections have tremendous political significance not only because of the power and budgets these municipal bodies control but also because they will act as a barometer of public sentiment ahead of the 2029 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
The Shiv Sena-now split between factions led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray-sees these elections as a fight over political identity and supremacy. The Shinde faction needs to establish its grassroots strength in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to cement its position as the “real Shiv Sena.” On the other hand, the BJP sees the BMC polls as a key chance to end the Sena’s tight grip on the city, which has lasted decades.
It is against this backdrop that the allegations of cash misuse have heightened political friction. Leaders from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, too, have jumped into the conversation. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) and the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) have joined the chorus for an inquiry by an impartial body, preferably the Election Commission of India (ECI). Senior NCP leader Jitendra Awhad questioned why both the state government and the BJP were “silent” if there was nothing to hide. He further called for the alleged cash seizure to be probed under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act.
As the controversy unfolds, legal experts say if cash was seized from a political worker without supporting documents or explanation, agencies like ECI, Income Tax Department, or state vigilance bodies can begin enforcement actions. However, the controversy remains shrouded in political mudslinging amid a lack of authenticated evidence. The ECI has not issued a formal statement, though sources said that it might ask for a preliminary report from Mumbai Police or any other relevant authorities once an official complaint is received. The BJP leaders have said they would initiate a defamation case against Rane if the latter fails to prove his allegations. With local body elections just a few months away, the political temperature in Maharashtra is expected to soar. Whether the alleged sting operation leads to tangible consequences or simply becomes another flashpoint in a long season of political slugfests remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the road to the civic polls is already proving to be turbulent, and the stakes have never been higher.
