A fire broke out at a commercial building on Kandivali Station Road in Mumbai’s Kandivali West during the early hours of Monday, August 17, prompting a swift response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Eleven people trapped inside a lodging facility on the second floor were safely rescued by firefighters. Officials said no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. The blaze was reported at around 4:14 a.m., when emergency services were alerted to the fire at Abhirai Hotel.
Fire Reported in Early Morning
According to officials, the incident occurred in a basement-plus-four-storey commercial building located near Kandivali railway station. The fire was classified as a Level-I incident, indicating that it was contained by emergency responders without developing into a larger-scale emergency.
When firefighters arrived, the building had become heavily smoke-logged. Thick smoke inside the premises created difficult conditions for occupants and emergency personnel, particularly those staying on the second floor. Firefighters used the staircase to reach the lodging house and evacuate all 11 people trapped inside.
The rapid evacuation helped prevent the incident from becoming more serious, especially given the early-morning timing when many occupants may have been asleep or unaware of the developing fire.
Electrical Installations and Furniture Affected
The fire affected electrical wiring and installations within the building, along with wooden furniture and other combustible materials. Officials also reported that materials including tarpaulin, bamboo and plastic at a temporary fruit stall adjoining the building were affected by the blaze.
The fire also spread to part of the fourth floor of the nearby Tirupati Banquet premises. Clothes, wooden furnishings and a false ceiling covering an area of approximately 50 square feet were reportedly damaged. Aluminium and plastic decorative sheets on the exterior of the building were also affected.
Firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading further to other portions of the densely built-up commercial area.
Fire Brought Under Control
Emergency crews continued firefighting and evacuation operations after reaching the location. The blaze was brought under control by approximately 6:07 a.m., according to reports. Following the operation, the premises remained smoke-filled and required ventilation and safety checks before normal activity could resume.
The successful rescue of all 11 occupants was the most significant outcome of the incident. Officials confirmed that there were no reported injuries among those rescued, although the building and several items inside suffered damage.
The incident also highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders when fires occur in mixed-use commercial buildings containing hotels, lodging facilities, shops and other establishments.
