BEST-run bus services are now functioning at normal frequencies in the city of Mumbai after experiencing interruptions earlier in the day. The interruptions occurred on several routes at the peak commute times, inconveniences caused to regular passengers who mostly rely on BEST buses for transportation due to the affordable nature of the services.
As per transport authorities, the disruptions were largely because of some operational and timetabling issues, including some minor technical checks for buses and changes in the deployment of staff. A couple of routes also faced delays because of traffic congestion at important intersections, causing the buses to be late in the morning.
Passengers in some areas of South Mumbai, the Eastern suburbs, and Western Corridors commuted with extended waiting times at bus stops. Some commuters claimed that either their buses were late or they came in bunches, causing peak occupancy on some routes. Office-goers, students, and senior citizens were some of the most impacted commuters, mainly on peak routes joining stations, office districts, and residential areas.
Officials from BEST said control rooms were monitoring the situation as soon as complaints began pouring in. More buses were added to busy routes to eliminate the backlog of passengers, and standby drivers were used for smooth operation of transport services. By late morning, the majority of the routes in operation were running in normal frequency.
The transport authorities have denied that there has been any major breakdown or strike that resulted in the disruption. “These are short-term issues that were dealt with immediately. However, our prime concern remains the safety of the passengers,” explained a transport official at BEST. Moreover, the transport official cited that maintenance checks are important to check that the buses are roadworthy, especially during peak usage.
The brief disruption has once again reinforced the significance of BEST transport services to the transportation network of Mumbai. Since local trains are already too crowded and traffic congestion is an issue when traveling by road, BEST transport is a vital alternative mode of transport that connects places that do not have direct train or metro connectivity. It is the most economic mode of transport.
Passengers readily welcomed the speedy resumption of services but called upon the relevant authorities to enhance effective communication in relation to incidents that lead to delays in their services. Some passengers confessed that they did not know the reason for delays in their bus services and were left guessing when waiting at bus queues.
BEST officials have accepted the feedback and stated measures are being put in place for better communication with the passengers. It was clarified that the GPS tracking and monitoringSystemService is being improved for timely response and updated information on arrivals.
Traffic specialists have also explained that congestion on the roads is another cause for the delay in bus arrival, particularly during the rush periods. Road construction, diversion, and the increase in the number of vehicles are some factors that may influence the punctuality of bus arrival.
During the evening peak, it was reported that services conducted by BEST were functioning well, and the buses were keeping time on most routes. The passenger stream continued to stabilize as people resumed their usual patterns of commuting.
BEST officials are assuring the public that steps are being taken to ensure that such problems are not experienced in the future. These steps include maintaining their vehicles as well as coordinating better with the traffic police and civic authorities. As Mumbai remains largely dependent on public transport services, the need for efficient transport on the BEST buses has become even more crucial. Commuters have been asked to organize their journey plans with a margin of time during the peak hours.
