Water Supply Upgrade: 75-Year-Old Water Main Replaced Between Tansa Dam and Bhandup Water Treatment Plant

In a major step towards modernization of Mumbai’s ageing water infrastructure, the BMC has replaced a crucial 75-year-old water main connecting Tansa Dam to Bhandup Water Treatment Plant, the city’s largest purification facility. The move marks one of the most significant upgrades to Mumbai’s water-distribution system in decades, promising improved reliability and reduced losses for millions of residents who depend on daily water supply from the Tansa system.

The pipeline, commissioned during the mid-20th century, had long outlived its intended operational life. Years of leaks, bursts, and deterioration in patches had gone on to become a recurring headache with civic engineers. The pipeline is part of the larger Tansa water supply scheme which carries treated and raw water over a very long distance along hilly and forested terrain before it reaches the Bhandup complex. Given the scale of dependence on the network, even small-scale disruptions often led to citywide water shortages across several wards.

BMC recognized the urgency for upgrading the water backbone of the city and undertook a multi-stage replacement project. The recent phase involved laying a modern, high-capacity water main made from corrosion-resistant materials engineered to last several decades. Officials said the new pipeline improves not just structural safety but flow efficiency, which can help minimize wastage due to seepage or pressure imbalances.

During the planning phase, the civic body faced logistical challenges typical of large-scale upgrades to water infrastructure. The terrain between the dam and the treatment plant required careful excavation work, strict compliance with environmental concerns, and safety in handling existing pipelines that still needed to function during replacements. The work had to be scheduled during periods of lower demand in order to avoid major disruptions in city water supply.

Speaking to media, a senior BMC hydraulic engineer called it “a monumental improvement in Mumbai’s long-term water security strategy.” He added that the rehabilitation of aging pipelines in the metropolitan area is part of the city’s roadmap to reduce non-revenue water loss — a major problem being faced globally by large urban water networks.

The Tansa-Bhandup water main is an important pipeline in the Mumbai water ecosystem. Asia’s largest water purification facility, the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant, processes a sufficient percentage of the daily requirement of water the city needs. Compromise in the pipeline that feeds into it leads to extensive disruption. Thus, the replacement not only strengthens supply lines but also enhances the plant’s operational stability, above all during the monsoon when fluctuations in the pressure of water are common.

Residents in several eastern and central suburbs, including Bhandup, Mulund, parts of Ghatkopar, and areas that are nearby, have faced frequent temporary water cuts or drops in pressure because of the maintenance works related to the old pipeline. The BMC officials now assure that such disturbances will decrease gradually following the upgrade, and the system will show more consistency during the high-demand summer months as well.

Infrastructure experts praise the effort but add that Mumbai has a bigger problem: thousands of water mains nearing or exceeding their operational lives need replacement. The city draws its water from hundreds of kilometres away through a network of pipelines fed by several dams including Tansa, Vaitarna and Bhatsa. These networks were installed over many decades in different technical eras, which makes uniform modernization a long-term effort. The water main replacement also comes at a time when the city is developing new reservoir and supply projects, such as the Gargai Dam and ambitious underground tunnel systems intended to improve network redundancy. Together, these projects are poised to create a more resilient water infrastructure system capable of supporting Mumbai’s rapidly expanding population.

While the immediate benefits of the upgrade would be seen gradually, BMC’s completion of the Tansa–Bhandup water main replacement stands as a strong signal of the city’s commitment to proactive infrastructure planning. For millions of Mumbaikars, a more dependable and efficient water supply network is not just a technical achievement; it has a lot to do with quality of life, public health, and urban sustainability.
