Maharashtra Boosts Uran Suburban Rail Services
In a major relief for commuters on the Navi Mumbai-Uran route, the Central Railway is set to introduce ten new daily train services. The announcement comes amid rising residential and industrial development along the Uran corridor, which has put pressure on existing road transport and rail infrastructure.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared the good news on social media, calling it “a special gift for Mumbaikars.” He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their support in approving the new services and halts at key stations Targhar and Gavhan.
How the New Services Are Structured
The ten additional services will be split as follows:
- Nerul-Uran-Nerul: Four trips
- Belapur-Uran-Belapur: Six trips
These trains will also stop at Targhar and Gavhan, both emerging as important local transport hubs. Currently, local trains between Nerul and Uran run every hour during peak hours and every 90 minutes during non-peak hours. With the new additions, the average gap between trains will reduce by around 15 minutes, increasing the total daily services on the Uran route from 40 to 50.
Targhar Station: A Key Hub for NMIA Connectivity
Targhar station, located between Belapur and Bamandongri stations, is being developed as a central hub for the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The station will feature terrace parking, integrated shuttle services, retail spaces, and three railway platforms to manage growing commuter traffic.
Central Railway officials confirmed that work on both Targhar and Gavhan stations is nearly complete. In the initial phase, the new services will connect Uran with these two stations, with plans to increase frequency based on demand.
Why This Matters for Commuters
The Uran corridor has seen rapid development in recent years, with new residential projects and industrial hubs emerging. Many commuters currently rely on road transport, which is often congested and time-consuming. The new train services are expected to:
- Reduce travel time and wait periods
- Improve connectivity for project-affected families relocating along the Uran corridor
- Boost access to NMIA as flight operations begin
A senior railway official said, “The halt at Targhar will significantly enhance NMIA connectivity. Over time, more services will be added based on passenger demand.”
What Passengers Can Expect
Currently, the Uran route serves about 40 trains daily. With the new services, commuters will benefit from shorter intervals between trains and more flexible travel options. This is particularly helpful for office-goers, students, and residents of newly developed areas along the route.
The Central Railway has not yet announced the exact date when the new services will start. The Railway Board has instructed that these changes be implemented at the earliest convenient date.
