MUMBAI, AUGUST 27, 2026: Tension briefly gripped Mumbai’s Parel-Chinchpokli area on Wednesday night after two groups clashed near the Laxmi Cottage building during an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession. The incident prompted Mumbai Police to deploy additional personnel in the area as a precautionary measure. By Thursday morning, officials said the situation had returned to normal and appealed to residents not to believe or spread rumours.
Clash Near Laxmi Cottage
According to police and local reports, the incident took place near Laxmi Cottage on Dr B R Ambedkar Road. A verbal altercation reportedly developed between two groups during the procession. Police said slogans were allegedly shouted by both sides before the argument escalated.
Reports of stone pelting and a scuffle subsequently emerged from the area. However, The Indian Express noted that it could not independently verify the reports of stone pelting or the use of mild force by police. Authorities moved quickly to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The incident occurred amid Eid Milad processions being held in different parts of Mumbai. The Parel-Chinchpokli area saw a large gathering of people, and the confrontation briefly disrupted movement through the locality.
Police Rush To The Spot
As soon as information about the clash reached authorities, senior police officers arrived at the location. Additional police personnel were deployed across Parel, Chinchpokli and surrounding areas to maintain law and order.
Some roads leading toward the affected area were temporarily restricted, while traffic was diverted through alternate routes as a precaution. Reports also said the Byculla-Lalbaug-Parel bridge was temporarily closed to vehicular traffic following the incident.
Police intervention helped disperse the crowd and prevent the confrontation from spreading. Videos circulating online appeared to show large crowds gathered on the road and police personnel attempting to restore order, although the circumstances shown in social-media footage could not independently establish the complete sequence of events.
Injuries And Police Case
A few people were reportedly injured during the confrontation and were taken to KEM Hospital in Parel for treatment. Most were later discharged, while those who remained under treatment were reported to be in stable condition.
Police also initiated legal action. The Bhoiwada Police registered a case in connection with the incident, with reports indicating that three people had been booked along with unidentified individuals. The investigation is continuing to establish exactly how the confrontation began and identify everyone involved.
Situation Under Control
Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Manoj Sharma said senior officers were present at the location and urged citizens to remain calm. He said there was no ongoing threat and appealed to people not to believe rumours circulating about the incident.
By Thursday morning, normal activity had resumed in the Parel-Chinchpokli area. Shops reopened and traffic movement returned to normal, while police remained deployed as a precaution.
The incident has nevertheless prompted heightened attention to security around religious processions in Mumbai, particularly as the city enters a busy festival period. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring sensitive locations and enforcing procession-related guidelines.
For now, officials have stressed that the situation is peaceful and under control, while the investigation into the clash and the circumstances leading up to it remains underway.
