The heightened vigilance comes after a series of incidents during recent Ganesh idol arrival processions, including a fatal idol-collapse accident in Bhuleshwar and tension during a Ganesh procession in Mazgaon. Authorities are focusing on crowd management, traffic control and the safe movement of idols through some of the city’s busiest festival zones.
Increased Vigilance in Key Festival Areas
Lalbaug and Parel are among Mumbai’s most prominent Ganeshotsav hubs, attracting large crowds during idol arrivals and later during darshan and immersion-related activities. The presence of major public Ganesh mandals means that thousands of devotees can gather in relatively narrow roads and lanes, creating significant challenges for police and civic authorities.
The need for additional precautions has become particularly important after recent incidents. On August 23, Mumbai Police said a preliminary investigation into the collapse of a 22-foot Ganesh idol during an arrival ceremony indicated that a welding support at the rear of the structure had broken, causing the idol to topple forward. Two people were killed and five others injured in that incident.
The accident has put greater attention on the structural safety of large idols, transportation equipment and the arrangements used during arrival processions.
Mazgaon Clash Raises Security Concerns
Another incident has added to concerns ahead of the festival. On Sunday night, tension erupted in Mazgaon during a Ganesh idol arrival procession after organisers alleged that eggs were thrown at the procession from a nearby building.
Police intervened after a large crowd gathered in the area. Reports said an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people had gathered on the streets before police dispersed the crowd. The situation was brought under control by Monday morning, with additional police personnel deployed in the locality and around the Ganesh pandal as a precaution.
An FIR has been registered and an investigation is underway. The incident has prompted authorities to remain particularly alert around sensitive procession routes and densely populated festival areas.
CCTV, Police and Crowd Management
Security preparations for Mumbai’s Ganeshotsav traditionally involve a combination of uniformed personnel, plain-clothes officers, CCTV surveillance, traffic management and crowd-control teams. Previous festival security plans have included extensive CCTV coverage, drone monitoring and specialised response units at major locations, including Lalbaug.
For Lalbaug and Parel, crowd movement is a major consideration because of the area’s dense urban layout and the popularity of prominent Ganesh mandals. Police deployment is expected to focus on maintaining clear movement corridors, preventing overcrowding and ensuring emergency vehicles can access the area if required.
Authorities are also likely to monitor procession routes closely and coordinate with mandal organisers, volunteers and other agencies to reduce risks during idol transportation.

The heightened security comes as Mumbai prepares for another major Ganeshotsav season, when thousands of devotees visit famous pandals and participate in idol arrival ceremonies. Lalbaugcha Raja remains one of the city’s biggest attractions, drawing enormous crowds and requiring extensive coordination between police, organisers and civic authorities.
The objective of the increased security is not only to respond to potential law-and-order issues but also to prevent accidents caused by overcrowding, unsafe structures, traffic congestion and inadequate crowd control.
With recent incidents still fresh, authorities are expected to maintain a heightened presence around Lalbaug, Parel and other major festival locations. For devotees, officials are likely to emphasise following barricades, cooperating with police personnel and avoiding unnecessary crowding.
As Ganeshotsav approaches, the emphasis is increasingly clear: large-scale celebrations must be accompanied by equally strong safety and security arrangements.
