A remarkable success story from Mumbai’s Dharavi is inspiring thousands across India after a tech professional overcame poverty, language barriers, and financial struggles to build a thriving career in the United States.
Sumit Gupta, who spent his early years in Mumbai’s Dharavi, now earns more than ₹2 crore annually while working for a leading American technology company. He recently achieved another major milestone by obtaining a US green card and purchasing a home for his parents in Mumbai.
Growing up in Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, Gupta faced challenges that extended far beyond financial limitations. He revealed that nobody in his family had studied beyond the seventh standard, and English was rarely spoken at home. The family later moved to Jogeshwari, but educational and financial hardships continued to shape his early years.
Gupta recalled that he struggled with English during his college days and was often mocked whenever he attempted to speak the language. Even after completing engineering studies, securing employment proved difficult. To gain experience, he accepted an unpaid web development role, hoping it would eventually open doors to better opportunities.
His dream of studying in the United States required significant sacrifices. Family members pooled resources and provided personal loans to help fund his first semester abroad. During that period, Gupta said there were times when the family did not even have ₹500 available after paying tuition fees and other educational expenses. Despite the financial strain, he continued pursuing higher education while working part-time to support himself.
Years of persistence eventually paid off. Gupta built a successful career in data engineering and analytics and now works as a Staff Analytics Engineer at Superhuman, the company that owns Grammarly. In addition to his corporate role, he is also known internationally as a speaker and author in the data analytics community. Earlier this year, he spoke at the Institute of Analytics Annual Conference in London.
Today, Gupta earns more than $200,000 annually, equivalent to over ₹2 crore, along with stock options. He disclosed that a significant portion of his income goes toward rent, food, and savings while living in the United States. His recent approval under the prestigious EB-1A category also granted him permanent residency through a green card.
One of the most emotional achievements for Gupta was buying a house for his parents in Kandivali, fulfilling a dream that seemed impossible during his childhood in Dharavi.
Looking ahead, Gupta says he wants to help other professionals navigate the complexities of US immigration and assist aspiring data professionals in building careers in an increasingly AI-driven industry. He has also emphasized that he believes in sharing knowledge freely and supporting those facing challenges similar to the ones he once encountered.
His journey from Dharavi’s narrow lanes to a successful global technology career stands as a powerful example of how education, resilience, and determination can transform lives.
