In a move aimed at honouring one of Maharashtra’s most respected political leaders and railway visionaries, the Maharashtra government has approved a proposal to rename Sawantwadi railway station after former Union Railway Minister Madhu Dandavate, widely remembered for his pivotal contribution to the development of the Konkan Railway network.
The station, located on the strategically important Konkan Railway route in Sindhudurg district, is expected to be renamed “Lokmanya Madhu Dandavate Railway Terminus” after receiving final approval from the Central Government. The proposal was cleared during a Maharashtra Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Madhu Dandavate, a veteran socialist leader and former Union Minister, is often referred to as the “architect of the Konkan Railway” because of his sustained efforts in pushing railway development across India’s western coastal region. During his tenure as Railway Minister between 1977 and 1979, he championed infrastructure expansion and worked toward improving rail connectivity in underserved areas.
The Konkan Railway project eventually transformed transportation across Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka by connecting coastal regions that had long struggled with limited transport infrastructure. Stretching through mountains, rivers, and challenging terrain, the railway line is considered one of independent India’s major engineering achievements. Supporters believe Dandavate’s vision laid the foundation for making the ambitious railway corridor a reality.
Government officials said the decision also fulfills a long-standing demand from people in the Konkan region who wanted a major railway station to bear Dandavate’s name as recognition of his contribution. Residents and local leaders have been seeking the renaming for several years, arguing that his work significantly improved regional connectivity and economic growth opportunities.
Apart from railway reforms, Dandavate held several important positions in public life. He served as Union Finance Minister and remained a prominent figure in Indian politics for decades. Known for his simplicity and policy-driven leadership, he earned respect across political lines for his contributions to governance and public welfare initiatives.
Officials clarified that while the state Cabinet has approved the proposal, the process requires clearance from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Railways before the renaming becomes official. Once approved, Sawantwadi station will formally adopt its new identity as Lokmanya Madhu Dandavate Railway Terminus.
The decision reflects a broader effort to honour leaders who played transformative roles in nation-building and infrastructure development. For many residents of Konkan, the move is not merely about changing a station name but preserving the legacy of a leader whose vision helped reshape transportation across western India.
