The Municipal Corporation has recently stepped up its campaign against illegal street encroachments in Mumbai. This is part of efforts to reduce congestion on the streets of Mumbai. There have been several complaints filed by residents about the blocked paths, traffic, and safety of residents due to illegal stalls, extensions, and structures on the streets.
According to civic body officials, the current phase of this campaign has been conducted systematically in major business hubs, residential areas, and main roadways. This was carried out by teams consisting of ward officials, enforcement, and the local police, who worked together to remove unauthorised occupation of footpaths, roads, and government land. Priority areas include the vicinity of railways stations, schools, and hospital road access.
As reported, the aim of the initiative is not only removal but prevention. The encroachments, especially in the case of footpaths, push the pedestrians onto the roads, resulting in an increased risk of accidents as well as slowing down the pace of the traffic flow. The authorities have explained that the need for footpath clearage is important for the safety of the cities, especially for senior citizens, children, or the physically disabled.
In this undertaking, community groups removed unauthorized hawker stalls, tore down illegal expansions of shops, removed construction materials set in public roads, and demolished sheds created without authority. Offenders who habitually broke authority received notices, while those who failed to obey received penalties. The authority also threatened to take severe measures against businesses found occupying public areas despite repeated warnings.
This operation has been coordinated with the local police in a manner that will avoid confrontations and facilitate the process of execution. Local police officers were also seen in sensitive areas where crowds were being managed, and law and order was being maintained during the removal operation. Civic officers reported that all operations were peaceful, though some were recorded in areas where vendors resisted.
The Municipal Corporation has also clarified that they are not targeting licensed street vendors who are operating in the vending areas allocated for vending. The main aim, according to the corporation, is the illegal and unlicensed encroachment that violates civic norms and impacts free flow of movement. The authority stated that surveys were being carried out to identify the licensed and the illegal vendors.
Residents’ associations, as well as commuters, have generally welcomed the strengthened drive, citing the difference that the effort has already created in terms of improved foot traffic in various neighborhoods. Residents have pointed out that pedestrian paths that were previously impassable due to the encroachment of stalls and parked cars are slowly becoming available. Some residents, however, have called on the city government to continue the drive.
Conversely, some of the small business dealers and vendors complained about the disappearance of stalls without prior notice. The civic authorities responded by saying that the administration is looking for a long-term remedy for this problem, which might include moving the vendors to vending areas as well as hawker markets.
The authorities clarified that the campaign forms part of the overall city management strategy that focuses on de-congesting the city, improving traffic flow efficiency, as well as providing enhanced safety. Given the high traffic and pedestrian flow recorded daily in Mumbai, any material closure could result in substantial disruptions.
The Municipal Corporation has asked residents to cooperate with the teams enforcing the rule and not to engage in illegal extension or occupation of public property. Residents have also been asked to report any new incidents of encroachment through the municipal helplines and ward offices. As the anti-encroachment drive continues in various phases all across Mumbai, the authorities have reemphasized the need to keep all the spaces in the city unobstructed. They believe that only a consistent effort in this direction, along with cooperation, can result in making the roads of Mumbai safe, manageable, and pedestrian-friendly.
