A budget provision of ₹95.35 crore was cleared by the Maharashtra state cabinet to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, who is remembered worldwide for sacrificing his life in defense of religious freedom. Programmes will be organized in various cities such as Nanded, Nagpur, and Kharghar in Maharashtra, inspired by the historical and cultural linkage those places have with Sikh heritage and the Guru’s memory.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, known as the Hind Di Chadar or Protector of India, was martyred in 1675 for standing up against forced conversions and defending the rights of people to practice their faith freely. His martyrdom is regarded not only as a cornerstone of Sikh history but also as a defining moment in India’s broader narrative of religious harmony and human rights. The decision to mark the 350th anniversary on such a large scale underlines the state’s recognition of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s universal teachings of courage, compassion, and secular values.
Nanded hosts the holy Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, one of the five temporal seats of Sikh authority, and is thus expected to be the hub of the celebrations. All major processions, religious congregations, cultural shows, and social service activities will be organized at this place. The state government has even proposed infrastructure development around Hazur Sahib to facilitate the large flow of pilgrims and tourists likely to arrive from all over the country and abroad.
These will be supplemented at Nagpur and Kharghar with interfaith dialogues, educational seminars, special sessions of kirtan, and historical exhibitions. The events seek to reflect the Guru’s work on equality, unity, and selfless service. Officials said the events would not be restricted to the Sikh community alone but would instead be all-embracing and open to every faith, just as the Guru’s message was.
The funds will be utilized towards the organization of events, preparation of venues, cultural activities, transportation, and security arrangements and outreach drives. Part of the budget is also likely to be used for digital awareness-activities, such as documentary screenings, online exhibitions, school-level educational modules, among others, to ensure the legacy of the Guru reaches the youth.
Maharashtra Chief Minister and other cabinet members said that this is a way not only to remember history but also to achieve unity and cultural understanding. “Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice is a symbol of India’s commitment to pluralism and religious freedom,” a cabinet representative said. “Commemorating his legacy is a reminder of the values that continue to guide our democracy.”
Community leaders from Sikh organizations have hailed the decision and thanked the state for its commitment. Many view the initiative as an opportunity to reinforce cultural bonding while uniting different communities through collective participation.
However, a few voices in the political and public spheres have called for transparency in the utilization of the budget and indicated that the commemorations must achieve a fine balance between celebrating culture and contributing to the welfare of the community. This includes proposals for utilizing part of the funds toward public service initiatives such as healthcare camps, educational support programs, and langars or community kitchens along with Sikh traditions.
Scholars and cultural observers alike mark that the commemoration has come at an opportune time. In recent years, public discussions of religious tolerance, the rights of minorities, and historical memory have taken center stage. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s story offers an example of leadership rooted in moral conviction and empathy-values that transcend communities and ideologies.
Committees made up of representatives from the community, cultural institutions, and government departments will work out details as the preparations progress.
