A major security scare unfolded at Billabong International School in Santacruz on Monday morning, after the institution received an anonymous bomb threat email, triggering an emergency evacuation and a coordinated multi-agency response. The incident, which caused panic among parents and staff, was later confirmed to be a hoax after thorough checks by the police and bomb detection squads revealed no explosive devices on the premises.
The police were informed at 10:05 AM when a threatening message was received at the school administration, claiming that an explosive had been planted somewhere inside the campus. The authorities immediately called the Mumbai Police Control Room in line with the established safety protocols and began the full evacuation of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff.
Quick evacuation, enormous emergency response.
Within minutes, teams from Santacruz Police, BDDS, QRT, and Mumbai Fire Brigade reached the spot. Ambulances, emergency vans, and K9 units were deployed as a precautionary measure. Visuals from the spot showed anxious parents rushing towards the school gates, with many of them making attempts to contact teachers or get their children out safely.
They were gathered in designated safe zones outside the school and remained calm, with the supervision of school staff. A number of the kids went to open areas nearby and also partner institutions as authorities instructed nobody to approach the main building until the whole campus was declared safe.
The entire perimeter of the school was cordoned off to prevent unauthorized access, and traffic was temporarily diverted on surrounding lanes to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.

The personnel of BDDS then conducted a thorough search of the school for the next three hours, scanning all classrooms, corridors, activity rooms, washrooms, playground areas, and storage sections. Sniffer dogs were sent in multiple rounds to detect any suspicious objects.
Meanwhile, by the early afternoon, police were able to confirm that no explosives or hazardous materials were detected, and the bomb threat was declared a false alarm. The e-mail used in delivering the threat is currently under forensic scrutiny.
A senior police officer said the message had vague warnings but no concrete demands and didn’t identify any motive. “At this stage, it appears to be a mischievous act intended to create panic,” the officer said, adding the cyber cell had been assigned to trace the origin of the email.
Parents Demand Accountability and Stronger Safety Protocols
Several parents, while relieved that the incident was a hoax, expressed frustration over the emotional distress their children had to bear, questioning how such emails can even disrupt school operations when cybersecurity is concerned.
Some others called for standardized bomb-threat rules for all schools, colleges, and universities by the state government to ensure timely notification and coordination. A few parents appreciated the crisis-management response of the school, saying evacuation was carried out quickly and without any chaos.
The management of the school issued an official statement, expressing their gratitude to the police and emergency teams for taking immediate action. They added that regular counseling sessions would be organized for the younger children who were feeling scared after the incident.
Police Launch Cyber Investigation
The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell has started tracking the IP address and digital footprint of the sender. Preliminary findings have revealed that the message may have been routed through third-party servers to mask the source. Investigators are examining whether this incident is linked to similar hoax threats received by other institutions in the past months.
Police then warned that these acts of “digital terrorism” will attract serious legal consequences under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, even if done as pranks. Depending on the intent and severity, culprits can face imprisonment and heavy fines.
A Growing Trend Nationally
This is part of a disturbing trend across the country, wherein several schools have been targeted by hoax bomb threats via email over the past few years. Such messages, experts feel, are usually inspired by online prank forums, while others may be attention-seeking behavior by individuals seeking to disrupt school schedules.
The police explained that “due to Mumbai’s sensitivity to security threats, particularly in a thickly populated region such as Santacruz, every threat is treated with maximum seriousness until proved otherwise.”
Normalcy Restored Classes were, however, called off, and the students were sent home after being counseled not to panic. The school will reopen once it gets a formal clearance from the police authorities. Meanwhile, both school management and police urged the family not to panic and have said that there is no imminent threat. The incident ended uneventfully, but it brought into sharp focus the dire need for solid security procedures and cyber vigilance in Mumbai’s schools and colleges.
