Mumbai, October 18, 2025 – The Santacruz police have arrested Dinath Shetty, the 31-year-old operations manager of the South Indian restaurant chain brand, Banana Leaf, in a big case of financial fraud on charges of allegedly siphoning off more than ₹1.23 crore from the company. The police apprehended Shetty in Mangaluru on October 15, 2025, after evading the authorities for over a year.

Shetty, who had the responsibility to deal with accounts, procurement, rent agreements, and machinery for five restaurant branches, is accused of misappropriating huge amounts of money from January 9 to May 1, 2024. A major part of the accused embezzlement happened while Shetty was in-charge of the Juhu Tara Road branch, and he was living in Mira Road East at that time. As per the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Suraj Shetty, Malgudi Foods director of the company running the Banana Leaf chain, Dinath Shetty misused his position of trust to siphon off company funds for personal purposes (Free Press Journal).

The probe found that after FIR registration in September 2024, Shetty disappeared into thin air. He turned off his mobile phone, halted bank transactions, and deleted himself from social media, making it hard for the authorities to track him. The turning point was when police fetched a CIBIL TransUnion report, which showed that Shetty had availed himself of several loans from a minimum of ten banks, including a vehicle loan. With the help of the registration number of his vehicle, the police tracked it down to Mangaluru, where it had been picked up for violating traffic rules. With the help of Mangaluru police, the Santacruz police tracked down and arrested Shetty.

Following his arrest, Shetty was produced in Mumbai on transit remand. He has been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as criminal breach of trust and cheating. The authorities are still probing his financial transactions to arrive at the total amount of embezzlement. This involves examining bank statements, account ledgers, and other papers to track diverted funds and recover the amount embezzled.

Banana Leaf’s parent organization, Malgudi Foods, has declared its complete cooperation with the law enforcement agencies. The company has also initiated internal audits in all its branches to determine if there are other possible instances of irregularities and tighten financial controls. Company officials stressed the need for tight financial controls and transparency to avoid such instances in the future.

The case has also raised general concerns regarding corporate governance and internal controls within companies. Workers given substantial financial responsibilities are both a liability and a burden to the firms they work for. Specialists recommend that routine audits, dual approval on large transactions, and open reporting procedures are necessary to prevent and detect fraud. Companies, especially those with numerous outlets and fragmented operations like chain restaurants, must have tight checks to discourage abuse of authority.

The arrest of Shetty is a lesson for all the organizations in Mumbai and even other places. It shows how there should be constant monitoring of finances and the dangers of giving a single employee unrestricted powers over important operations. The case also emphasizes the seriousness of prompt intervention by authorities when there is a complaint of suspicious behavior since timely investigations may avoid further losses.

Public responses to the incident are a source of concern regarding corporate responsibility and staff trust. Although financial impropriety is possible in any industry, recurring instances of such high-profile scams could undermine public trust in business activity and investor confidence. In this case, the prompt arrest and assistance provided by the firm to the law enforcement authorities are measures toward regaining confidence.

With the probe ongoing, officials are determined that justice be done and that the extent of the embezzlement be revealed. This will involve following Shetty’s financial dealings and retrieving the stolen money. Experts are optimistic that the case will also prompt other corporations to implement more effective financial monitoring mechanisms and take more vigorous preventive steps against fraud.

Finally, the arrest of Dinath Shetty for misappropriation of ₹1.23 crore from Banana Leaf restaurants points to the susceptibilities faced by companies in handling financial operations. It underscores the importance of robust internal controls, close monitoring, and stringent checking of financial accountability. The incident serves as a reminder to businesses throughout Mumbai and India to maintain transparency, ethical management, and frequent audits to protect their financial well-being and image.
