Mumbai, August 19, 2026: A shocking incident in Mumbai’s Navy Nagar area has left the city stunned after an Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead inside their residence on August 15. Police are investigating the case as a suspected murder-suicide and are examining the circumstances that may have preceded the deaths. The Indian Navy has confirmed the incident and said it is extending all possible assistance to the ongoing investigation.
The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra, his 28-year-old wife Oma, their three-year-old son Yash and their two-month-old daughter. Police initially registered an Accidental Death Report after discovering the bodies at the family’s official residence in Navy Nagar, Colaba. The bodies were subsequently sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem examinations to establish the precise causes and sequence of deaths.
Police Suspect Family Members Died First
According to investigators, Mehra was found hanging inside the residence, while his wife and children were found on a bed. Preliminary findings led police to suspect that the sailor died by suicide after his wife and children had already died. Investigators have been examining the possibility that the three family members died from poisoning, although the final cause of death is dependent on forensic and post-mortem findings.
Police have also reportedly observed differences in the condition of the bodies, which they believe could indicate that the wife and children died earlier than Mehra. Investigators are therefore reconstructing the timeline of events from August 14 and August 15 to determine exactly what happened inside the residence. No definitive conclusion about the motive has been announced.
Investigation Examines Digital Evidence
The investigation has expanded beyond the physical evidence recovered from the home. Police suspect that Mehra may have cleaned the residence and removed or destroyed potential evidence before his death. Investigators have also said that the phones belonging to Mehra and his wife were formatted, making digital recovery an important part of the probe. Cyber experts are assisting authorities in attempting to retrieve relevant information from the devices.
Reports have also indicated that Mehra allegedly sent a WhatsApp message to his mother shortly before the incident. Investigators are examining the message and other communications to understand his state of mind and establish a more accurate timeline.
Personal and Financial Issues Under Probe
Police are investigating several possible factors that could have contributed to the tragedy. Investigators are examining reported monetary and property disputes involving Mehra and his siblings. Police have also said that Mehra had been undergoing treatment for depression and was taking medication. However, authorities have not established a definitive motive, and investigators are continuing to verify these circumstances rather than attributing the deaths to any single factor.
Another point being examined is Mehra’s service history. According to police, he had taken a 15-day parental leave in June but did not return to duty afterward. Investigators are looking into his movements, communications and circumstances during this period as part of the broader inquiry.
Navy and Police Continue Investigation
The Indian Navy confirmed that the sailor, his wife and their two children were found dead at their Navy Nagar residence on August 15. The Navy said the police investigation was in progress and that it was providing assistance to the authorities.
For now, investigators are awaiting forensic and post-mortem findings that could establish the exact causes and sequence of the deaths. Police are also analysing digital evidence, personal circumstances and other material recovered during the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced a final conclusion regarding the motive or circumstances surrounding the deaths.
