The Maharashtra government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 crore for each participating akhara ahead of the upcoming Nashik Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. The decision was taken as part of the state’s broader preparations for the mega spiritual event expected to attract millions of pilgrims, saints, and tourists from across India and abroad.
According to officials, the financial support will be provided to recognized akharas to help them build temporary camps, improve accommodation facilities, arrange sanitation systems, and manage logistics during the Kumbh Mela period. Government sources stated that the aid is intended to ensure smoother arrangements for devotees and religious organizations participating in the event.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reportedly approved the proposal during a high-level review meeting focused on Kumbh Mela infrastructure and crowd management planning. Senior officials from the urban development, tourism, public works, and health departments were also present during the discussions.
The Nashik Kumbh Mela is considered one of Hinduism’s holiest gatherings and takes place every 12 years on the banks of the Godavari River. Major akharas representing different Hindu sects play a central role in the religious ceremonies, especially the traditional “Shahi Snan” processions that attract enormous crowds.
State authorities said preparations for the event are already underway in Nashik and nearby Trimbakeshwar. Large-scale infrastructure upgrades including roads, riverfront development, public transport facilities, temporary housing, sanitation systems, and healthcare services are being accelerated before the arrival of pilgrims.
Officials estimate that tens of millions of devotees could attend various rituals and bathing ceremonies during the Kumbh period, making crowd management and public safety top priorities for the administration. Advanced surveillance systems, drone monitoring, AI-based traffic management, and emergency response units are also expected to be deployed during the event.
The announcement of ₹5 crore assistance for each akhara has received mixed political reactions. Supporters of the move argue that the Kumbh Mela generates major economic activity for the state through tourism, hospitality, local businesses, and religious travel. They say proper arrangements are essential for managing such a massive gathering safely and efficiently.
Opposition leaders, however, questioned the scale of public spending, arguing that government funds should also prioritize healthcare, education, and rural development. Some critics accused the administration of using religious events for political messaging ahead of future elections.
Religious leaders associated with several akharas welcomed the decision and thanked the state government for recognizing their logistical challenges. Representatives stated that organizing accommodation, food distribution, medical aid, and sanitation for thousands of saints and followers requires extensive financial resources.
Tourism officials believe the Nashik Kumbh Mela could significantly boost Maharashtra’s tourism economy. Hotels, transport operators, local markets, and pilgrimage services are expected to witness huge demand during the event. Authorities are also promoting the Kumbh internationally to attract spiritual tourism from overseas visitors interested in Indian culture and traditions.
The Maharashtra government has reportedly allocated a massive overall budget for the Kumbh Mela, covering infrastructure expansion, civic upgrades, security deployment, and religious facilities. More announcements regarding transport connectivity and pilgrim services are expected in the coming months.
As preparations intensify, Nashik is gradually transforming into a large-scale religious and administrative hub ahead of one of India’s most important spiritual events.
