Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026: Dr. Kartik Karkera’s Stunning Win in Full Marathon
Mumbai witnessed a thrilling finish at the Tata Mumbai Marathon as orthopedic surgeon and distance runner Dr. Kartik Karkera clinched gold in the elite men’s category of the full marathon, proving that passion and perseverance can take you a long way—literally.
A Surgical Strike on the Track
Dr. Karkera, 28, originally from Mumbai and now based in Nashik, completed the 42.195 km marathon in 2:19:55, narrowly outpacing defending champion Anish Thapa (2:20:08) and Pradeep Chaudhary (2:20:49).
This victory is remarkable not just for the timing but also because it was his maiden attempt at a full marathon. Last year, he had finished third in the TMM half marathon, marking a swift rise in the competitive distance-running scene.
Balancing Medicine and Marathon Training
For most, juggling a demanding medical career and professional sports is nearly impossible—but Dr. Karkera makes it work. He practices at Dr. Vasantrao Pawar Hospital in Nashik, specializing in orthopedic care, while also training under coach Vijendra Singh.
“It’s tough, especially now that I’m getting recognition. I treat a lot of patients, some very demanding, but I try to balance my medical practice and endurance training,” he said. He added that feedback from his patients encourages him to continue managing both careers successfully.
Peer Praise: Understanding Athletes’ Needs
Two-time women’s full marathon champion Nirmaben Thakor, who finished with silver, praised Dr. Karkera’s dual expertise.
“He knows the psychology of athletes extremely well. Being both a doctor and an athlete, he understands injuries and helps us recover faster,” she said.
A Journey of Support and Resilience
Dr. Karkera credits his family for keeping him motivated from a young age. “Parents play a huge role in encouraging children to pursue sports alongside studies. It’s not easy. I sometimes cried because of the pressure, but my parents supported me,” he said.
He also highlighted how his medical knowledge has aided his athletic journey, allowing him to train and recover safely.
The Crowd Made the Difference
Winning in your hometown is always special, and Dr. Karkera says Mumbai’s crowd support played a huge role.
“People cheering and even calling my name along the course motivated me immensely. To be born and raised in Mumbai and then win the Mumbai Marathon—it’s an unforgettable feeling,” he said.
Looking Ahead: Delhi Marathon and Asian Games
With his sights set high, Dr. Karkera is now preparing for the Delhi Marathon on February 22, aiming to hit the 2:15:04 qualification mark for this year’s Asian Games in Japan.
“This is just the beginning. My goal is to combine my professional knowledge with athletic performance and continue setting an example for young athletes,” he added.
