Fadnavis Emerges as the Undisputed Hero of Mahayuti’s Historic Triumph
Devendra Fadnavis has led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory before, but the 2026 Maharashtra local body elections marked something very different. This time, it was not a campaign powered by national leaders or a centrally driven narrative. Instead, it was almost entirely his show.

Across 29 municipal corporations, the BJP won or was leading in 1,422 of the total 2,869 seats as counting neared completion. Most significantly, the party wrested control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from the Shiv Sena after nearly 25 years, a political feat few believed was possible until recently.
Speaking during the victory celebrations in Mumbai, Fadnavis called it a grand victory for the party and credited voters for backing the BJP’s development-focused agenda.
According to him, the electorate responded positively to the promise of modern cities, infrastructure upgrades, and inclusive governance rooted in the party’s ideology.
BJP’s Solo Strategy Paid Off
One of the most striking aspects of the elections was how independently the BJP fought.
Out of the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls:
- The BJP contested 15 corporations on its own or with smaller partners
- It fought two corporations in alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
- Eight were contested with the Shiv Sena
- The full Mahayuti alliance was in play in just four corporations
Despite this fragmented alliance structure, the BJP emerged as the dominant force, highlighting both organizational strength and the effectiveness of its campaign leadership.

The capture of the BMC stands out as the most symbolic victory.
For over two decades, Mumbai’s civic body had remained firmly under Shiv Sena control. The BJP’s breakthrough here not only reshapes Mumbai’s political landscape but also strengthens Fadnavis’s image as a leader capable of delivering results in the toughest battlegrounds.
With Mumbai playing a central role in Maharashtra’s economy and governance, the win carries weight far beyond municipal politics.
A Leader Who Faced Persistent Criticism
Fadnavis’s journey to this moment has not been without challenges.
Critics have frequently pointed out that he belongs to the Brahmin community, which accounts for only around 2% of Maharashtra’s population. Others blamed him for the BJP’s fallout with the undivided Shiv Sena after the 2019 assembly elections, which eventually led to the Sena forming a government with the Congress and the NCP.
Political observers, however, argue that the split was driven more by Shiv Sena’s ambition to have its own chief minister rather than any miscalculation on Fadnavis’s part.
From Political Setback to Strategic Revival
After the 2019 upheaval, Fadnavis played a key role in engineering splits within both the Shiv Sena and the NCP. This led to the formation of the Eknath Shinde-led government in June 2022, with Fadnavis serving as deputy chief minister.
Still, the Mahayuti alliance faced a major setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning only 17 of Maharashtra’s 48 seats. That defeat sparked internal criticism and raised questions about Fadnavis’s leadership.
Instead of retreating, he responded with strategy.
The 29-Point Plan That Changed Everything
According to party insiders, Fadnavis convinced the BJP’s central leadership that the Lok Sabha defeat stemmed largely from poor candidate selection. He then presented a detailed plan for the assembly elections, including a 29-point programme focused on governance, welfare delivery, and urban development.
The results were dramatic.
In the assembly elections, the BJP won 132 of the 145 seats it contested, delivering a staggering strike rate of 89%. The scale of the victory left little doubt about who deserved the chief minister’s post.
As one senior BJP minister admitted privately, the party had expected to win around 105 seats. The final tally far exceeded internal projections.
Development and Mumbai’s Makeover at the Core
Development remained the backbone of the BJP’s campaign.
From welfare schemes to infrastructure expansion and Mumbai’s ambitious multi-billion-dollar transformation, the party framed the election as a choice between progress and stagnation.
In contrast, the opposition Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi appeared largely absent from the campaign narrative, struggling to present a unified or compelling alternative.

Fadnavis’s personal involvement was relentless.
During just the second phase of the local elections, he participated in 77 events, including rallies, roadshows, and interviews. He conducted nearly the same number during the first phase as well.
Party leaders note that no other politician, whether from the ruling alliance or the opposition, matched his level of engagement.
This marked a sharp contrast with the 2017 BMC elections, when national leaders dominated the campaign trail. In 2026, it was Fadnavis alone who carried the BJP’s message across the state.
Criticism Over “Outsiders” Likely to Fade
Some critics within the party have accused Fadnavis of inducting too many leaders from outside the BJP. While this remains a point of debate, even detractors admit that the scale of the recent victory is likely to mute such criticism for now.
The results have strengthened his authority within the party and given him greater freedom to shape future strategies.
A Leader with Growing National Relevance
Political analysts believe the municipal election results have firmly reinforced Fadnavis’s leadership credentials.
Mumbai-based analyst Hemant Desai noted that the outstanding performance positions Fadnavis as a serious contender on the national stage, not just a regional heavyweight.
With repeated electoral successes, a proven ability to recover from setbacks, and a strong hold over Maharashtra’s political machinery, Fadnavis’s influence now extends well beyond state borders.
