The Mumbai Traffic Police have deployed additional personnel across major party zones in the city to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety ahead of New Year celebrations. With large crowds expected to gather at popular nightlife hubs, restaurants, clubs, beaches, and public promenades, authorities have intensified monitoring to prevent congestion, accidents, and violations.
Senior traffic officials said extra deployment has been planned in high-footfall areas such as Bandra, Juhu, Andheri West, Lower Parel, Worli, Colaba, and South Mumbai. These locations typically witness heavy movement of private vehicles, taxis, and app-based cabs during year-end celebrations. The focus of the deployment is on maintaining traffic discipline, preventing drunk driving, and ensuring emergency vehicles can move freely.
Special checkpoints have been set up on arterial roads leading to party hotspots, where traffic police are conducting breathalyser tests and document checks. “Our priority is public safety. Drunk driving and reckless behaviour will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against violators,” a senior traffic police official said. He added that additional mobile vans and tow trucks have been positioned to quickly clear breakdowns or illegally parked vehicles.
Traffic diversions and temporary restrictions have also been introduced in select areas to manage congestion. In zones with narrow roads and heavy pedestrian movement, entry of heavy vehicles has been restricted during late evening and night hours. Police personnel have been stationed at key junctions to manually regulate traffic during peak periods when signal systems may be insufficient due to crowd pressure.
The traffic police are also working closely with local police stations and civic authorities to ensure coordinated action. CCTV surveillance is being actively monitored from control rooms to track congestion points in real time. Based on live inputs, field officers are being directed to adjust traffic flow and prevent bottlenecks from escalating.
Pedestrian safety is another key focus area during the celebrations. Barricades have been installed near party venues, beaches, and promenades to prevent people from spilling onto roads. Reflective cones, signboards, and temporary lighting arrangements have been put in place to improve visibility and reduce the risk of accidents, especially late at night.
Commuters have been advised to use public transport wherever possible and plan their journeys in advance. The Mumbai Traffic Police have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during peak celebration hours and to follow instructions issued through official social media handles. “A little cooperation from the public goes a long way in ensuring everyone reaches home safely,” an official said.
App-based cab operators and taxi unions have also been briefed to follow designated pick-up and drop-off points near party venues. In previous years, random stopping of vehicles near clubs and restaurants had caused severe traffic snarls. This time, strict enforcement will be carried out against unauthorised stopping and double parking.
Emergency preparedness has been strengthened as well. Ambulances and fire tenders have been kept on standby in sensitive zones, and traffic personnel have been instructed to give immediate right of way to emergency vehicles. Hospitals across the city have coordinated with traffic control rooms to ensure swift response in case of medical emergencies.
Citizens have largely welcomed the increased deployment, viewing it as a necessary step to maintain order during one of the busiest nights of the year. However, some motorists have expressed concerns about delays due to checkpoints. Police officials clarified that checks are being conducted systematically to minimise inconvenience while ensuring safety.
