Ganesh Naik Sparks Controversy Ahead of Navi Mumbai Municipal Elections
The upcoming Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections have turned into one of the most intense and fractured contests for the ruling Mahayuti alliance. BJP leader Ganesh Naik has launched a high-profile campaign that has angered the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and even drawn criticism from within his own party.

Naik’s Bold Campaign: Freezing Taxes and Expanding Influence
Ganesh Naik unveiled his campaign with his signature populist promises, reviving a pledge to freeze property tax and water charges for another 20 years.
“In 2000, I promised no increase in property tax or water charges, and I kept that promise. Now, I announce a freeze for the next 20 years,” Naik said. He also confidently declared, “Navi Mumbai’s mayor will be from the BJP. I say this with full confidence.”
Pushing the envelope further, Naik claimed he would work even harder for the civic polls than he did for Lok Sabha and assembly elections, hinting at a relentless campaign style.
Tension With Shiv Sena: Crossing Turf Boundaries
Naik’s statement about expanding his influence beyond Navi Mumbai—into Thane, Kalyan, and Dombivli—angered Shiv Sena, which considers these areas as part of its core territory.
“If they act right, we will take them along. If they act wrong, we will respond accordingly. If we do not get respect, we are not obliged to respect them either,” Naik warned, clearly signaling his willingness to challenge the alliance if provoked.
Shiv Sena interpreted this as a direct challenge to deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde. The tension became visible when Shinde skipped a joint event with Naik at the Shivaji Maharaj statue inauguration in Nerul, a move widely seen as a message to the BJP leader.
Sena leaders have since stepped up city-wide mobilization, raising concerns that the alliance could fracture on the ground even if it holds at the state level. Kishore Patkar, Navi Mumbai’s Shiv Sena chief, filed a PIL challenging Naik’s public grievance meetings, saying, “The Shiv Sena is very strong in the city and we will not sit quietly if our leader is targeted.”
Internal BJP Challenges: Manda Mhatre Pushes Back
Naik’s campaign is not only facing opposition from Shiv Sena but also from within the BJP. Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre is challenging his dominance, particularly in light of the new reservation rules, which allocate 56 out of 111 civic seats to women.
Mhatre criticized what she called Naik’s “dynastic dominance,” stating, “Those who had left and returned now demand tickets for multiple family members. This is the BJP, not Congress or NCP.”
She positioned herself as a champion of women’s political empowerment, emphasizing that with 56 women corporators to be elected, the BJP must ensure meaningful representation rather than appointing a woman as a symbolic figurehead.
“If the mayor’s post is reserved for a woman, she will not be a showpiece controlled by men,” Mhatre said, signaling her commitment to grassroots leadership and gender equity.
The Ticket Battle: A Critical Fault Line
The contest for tickets has become the most explosive issue in the Navi Mumbai BJP. Many former corporators loyal to Naik are seeking renomination, creating tension within the party. Mhatre has insisted that priority should be given to grassroots workers rather than dynastic claims, turning the ticket allocation process into a high-stakes battle.
