Shiv Sena (UBT) Eyes Pune Ahead of Municipal Elections
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is now turning his focus to Pune, aiming to challenge the BJP in the city after years of being sidelined in the alliance. Thackeray has admitted that Pune was neglected due to the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance despite the party’s strong presence in the city. With municipal elections approaching, the party is preparing an aggressive campaign to highlight BJP’s governance and alleged irregularities over the past five years.
Compiling BJP’s Record: Election Files Ready
Local Shiv Sena leaders, including Pune City Chief Sanjay More, Gajanan Tharkude, and former corporator Vasant More, met Thackeray in Mumbai to brief him on preparations for the elections. They handed him a detailed file documenting the promises BJP made in the 2017 municipal elections and the actual implementation of development projects.
The file also includes alleged irregularities in the execution of these works. The plan is to present this information to Pune residents during a public meeting, aiming to expose the BJP’s shortcomings and rally local support for Shiv Sena (UBT).
Public Meeting and Political Strategy
During the upcoming public meeting in Pune, Thackeray is expected to highlight the BJP’s administrative failures and showcase a glimpse of ‘Laav Re Toh Video,’ similar to MNS president Raj Thackeray’s style of using multimedia to engage voters.

Thackeray visited Pune in October and openly admitted that the party had often been sidelined in alliance politics, despite having significant strength in the city.
“Shiv Sena has strength in Pune, but so far, we have been victims of alliances. Every time we were ignored as an alliance,” he said. Thackeray promised that if Pune residents support him, he will actively work to strengthen the party in the city.
With municipal elections approaching, this visit signals Shiv Sena (UBT)’s renewed focus on Pune and its intention to directly confront the BJP.
The ‘Pune Pattern’ in Politics
Pune has a history of political collaborations that have shaped its municipal governance. In 2007, Shiv Sena, BJP, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) joined forces to limit the influence of former MP Suresh Kalmadi. Known as the ‘Pune Pattern,’ this arrangement divided power: NCP held the mayor and deputy mayor positions, Shiv Sena controlled the standing committee chairmanship, and BJP served as the Leader of the Opposition.
However, the alliance broke ahead of the 2009 assembly elections, and the consequences were significant for Shiv Sena. The number of corporators from Shiv Sena steadily declined: from 20 in 2007 to 15 in 2012, and then 10 in 2017. Today, only three corporators represent Shiv Sena (UBT) in Pune, highlighting the need for a revival in the city.
