Navi Mumbai Traffic Police have issued temporary restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles on a number of key routes from 6 am to 10 pm today, in view of the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The restrictions are intended to make arrangements for smooth traffic flow, security, and public convenience during the high-profile event, which is likely to attract dignitaries, senior officials, and huge crowds.
As per an official release, the traffic restrictions include main roads going to the NMIA project site, parts of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Sion–Panvel Highway, Palm Beach Road, and Amra Marg. Heavy vehicle movement—trucks, trailers, and construction carriers—will be banned within the specified hours, unless they are carrying essential commodities or emergency supplies.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Navi Mumbai, said the move was taken to prevent congestion and ensure safety since a number of VIP convoys and public transport vehicles are likely to move through sensitive junctions around the airport. “We are providing minimum disruption to regular commuters while ensuring strict traffic discipline in the event area. Heavy vehicle operators have been warned beforehand to plan their route accordingly,” the officer added.
The police have also released a traffic advisory asking residents and commuters to take alternative routes during the restriction time. There will be permission for buses and light commercial vehicles to move but may undergo checks at security barricades placed close to Panvel, Ulwe, and Dronagiri. To provide better coordination, traffic staff have been deployed at all key intersections with the help of drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring.
The commissioning of Phase I of the ₹19,650 crore Navi Mumbai International Airport is a landmark moment for infrastructure development in Maharashtra. Officials anticipate thousands of participants, including the state’s and national-level political brass, bureaucrats, and industry stalwarts. The magnitude of the event has caused the Maharashtra State Police to implement a multi-tiered security strategy, blending ground sweeps, bomb squads, and anti-drone defense.
Local transport unions and logistics associations have showed their support for the temporary restriction, conceding the importance of the event. Still, transporters have raised issues regarding delayed deliveries and economic implications, especially on time-sensitive cargo headed towards JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust). To address this, police officials clarified that transportation of essential goods to and from JNPT shall be carried out under special clearance to avoid hindrance of port operations.
Locals in Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas have been requested to keep away from unnecessary trips near the airport region during the daytime, particularly near NH-348, Palm Beach Road, and Ulwe node, where diversions are operational.
Officials clarified that these restrictions are only temporary and will be removed once the event is over. Traffic movement will be normal by late night, and information will be provided through official social media channels of Navi Mumbai Traffic Police and CIDCO.
The traffic barricades highlight the extent of the preparations for one of the largest infrastructure inaugurations in western India. As Navi Mumbai prepares to stage its inaugural big international airport event, authorities are focusing on safety, discipline, and smooth flow for all stakeholders and travelers.
