Mumbai, Oct 6, 2025 – The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has given its official nod to the final boundaries of the wards of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, taking a crucial step towards holding the eagerly awaited civic polls. This follows a complete scrutiny of the public suggestions and objections as well as adherence to the Supreme Court’s directive to finalize the elections by January 31, 2026.
Finalization Process
During August 2025, the SEC issued a draft delimitation notification defining the proposed geographical limits of BMC wards. People were asked to make suggestions and objections up to September 4. 492 responses were obtained, which were addressed from September 11 to September 13. The SEC then finalized the ward configuration, which was issued in the Maharashtra government gazette and posted on the BMC official website on October 6.

The SEC has expressed that elections are expected to be conducted by the end of this year or early next year in 2026. This comes after a long time since there was no elected body, with the term of the last corporators expiring on March 7, 2022. Since then, the BMC has been governed through an appointed municipal commissioner.
