In a major breakthrough pointing to corruption in municipal administration, Shankar Patole, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Deputy Municipal Commissioner, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on October 1, 2025. Patole, the head of the Anti-Encroachment Department, was caught while allegedly receiving a bribe of ₹25 lakh from a developer. The amount was out of a larger sum, with an initial installment of ₹10 lakh allegedly already received, totalling to ₹35 lakh.
Arrest Details
The ACB operation took place at the headquarters of the TMC in Thane, where Patole was caught red-handed when the bribe was being accepted. He was accompanied by Omkar Gaikar, a private citizen who is said to have mediated the bribe. Both were arrested and sent to police custody until October 4, 2025.
Political and Administrative Consequences
The arrest has caused a shockwave on the local political scene. State Minister Yogesh Kadam called off a planned Navratri event as part of the fallout from the scandal. Further, BJP minister Ganesh Naik admitted to the prevalent corruption in the civic bodies of Thane for the last five years, indirectly criticizing Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is the guardian of urban development in the area.
The Congress party has also raised objections, questioning Patole’s recent promotion in light of previous allegations of corruption. The TMC government has kept quiet so far, citing no formal word from the ACB.
Ongoing Investigation
ACB’s probe continues, with more raids and seizure of documents on the anvil. More persons, such as Sushant Surve, who claimed to have been used as an intermediary in the bribe, are in the line of fire. The case has made demands for more transparency and accountability in municipal activities more shrill.
