The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration, also known as the FDA took a step and closed down two mess facilities at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also known as IIT Bombay on 7 August 2026. This happened because these facilities did not follow the rules about food safety and licensing.
The FDA is trying to make sure that all food establishments in the state follow the rules about hygiene and safety. The two mess facilities that were closed down are located in the hostels on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai. The people in charge found out that these facilities were operating without the permissions and registrations that are required by the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The FDA found out that the people running these facilities did not have the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India licenses, which are necessary for running any food service operation in the country. The FDA immediately told these facilities to stop operating until they meet the required standards.
This caused problems for the students who live in the hostels and depend on these facilities for their meals. However the people in charge of IIT Bombay said that they are trying to find arrangements to minimize the inconvenience.
The FDA Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe is leading this effort to make sure that all food establishments in Maharashtra follow the rules. This is not about the educational institutions but also about the restaurants, dhabas, cloud kitchens and catering services in big cities like Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
During the inspection the FDA also found out that another catering service at IIT Bombay was not following the rules properly. Even though this facility had a license it was given a notice to improve because it was not following the hygiene standards and compliance protocols.
The FDA is taking a stance on this issue because it is very concerned about the safety of the food that people eat. The FDA is particularly concerned about the food safety in places like campuses where a lot of people depend on the food services.
The people in charge of IIT Bombay said that they are waiting for a report from the FDA and that they will take all the necessary steps to make sure that they follow all the rules.
This is not the time that the food facilities at IIT Bombay have been in trouble. There have been incidents in the past that have prompted the FDA to take action.
The FDA is sending a message to all the food operators in Maharashtra that they have to follow the rules about licensing and hygiene. If they do not they will face consequences.
