In a shocking incident of impersonation and robbery, two persons, posing as police officers, allegedly cheated and robbed nearly ₹2 crore in cash from businessmen in a case reported in South Mumbai. The incident has raised serious questions over public safety and the growing misuse of authority by criminals to deceive unsuspecting citizens.
According to the Mumbai Police, the incident happened along a busy commercial street in South Mumbai, where two men convincingly dressed up as police personnel approached the victims, who were local businessmen. The accused stated that there is an inquiry of a monetary nature concerning the complainants and that they must cooperate in it immediately. The suspects used fear, authority, and confidence to gain the victims’ trust.
The accused interrogated the businessmen for some time and demanded that they show them the cash carried with them to be used for “verification purposes.” The businessmen, convinced that the men were genuinely policemen and believing that they would otherwise be in legal trouble, did what they were told. The accused left with cash worth about ₹2 crore and absconded shortly after.
Later, when the businessmen tried to follow up at a police station, they found that they had been conned and immediately lodged a complaint. Senior police officers were informed, and multiple teams were formed to investigate the case. CCTVs from surrounding areas were checked, and technical surveillance helped the police trace the movements of suspects.
While one of the accused was arrested by Mumbai Police after an extensive search, the arrested person has been kept in police custody to know the second suspect who is still absconding. Investigations revealed that the duo may be part of a bigger gang involved in similar impersonation crimes across the city.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the crime was well-planned by the accused. According to reports, they studied police behavior, uniforms, and terminology to pose as police officers in order to trick their victims convincingly. Police are also probing whether any fake uniforms or forged identity cards were used during the crime and if the suspects had any prior criminal records.
According to a senior police officer, the modus operandi of criminals turning themselves into police officers is becoming increasingly sophisticated. “These crooks know people are afraid and respect the authority of the police. But sometimes, no matter how convincing they may be, one should be aware and check on their credentials, even though they say they are police,” said the official.
The incident has sent a wave of concern among the business communities, particularly among those communities dealing with large cash transactions. Associations of traders have asked police to increase patrolling in the commercial zones and to conduct awareness drives to educate people about verifying police identity during checks.
Mumbai Police have issued a public advisory asking the citizens not to hand over any cash, valuables, or personal documents during roadside questioning unless they are taken to an official police station. The public has been advised to ask for proper identity cards, note badge numbers, and if in doubt, call the police control room for verification.
Recovering the robbed money and arresting the second accused continue. Police are investigating whether the suspects were involved in similar cases reported earlier and whether any insider information helped them target the businessmen.
This entire incident has acted as a big shock for anyone who had thought that despite there being a strong presence of the police in the city, new ways are still being innovated by criminals to exploit the element of trust among the masses.
