Authorities also seized medicines worth another ₹4.02 lakh that were allegedly being stored without the required licences.

The enforcement drive focused on food storage and distribution facilities used by online and e-commerce businesses, with officials checking expiry dates, mandatory labelling, shelf life, manufacturing information, storage conditions and compliance with food safety regulations.

Amazon Facilities Face Action

At Amazon’s BLR6 facility in Devanahalli, officials reportedly seized food products worth ₹14 lakh over incorrect or inadequate labelling, along with expired food products valued at ₹10 lakh. The total food seizure at the facility stood at approximately ₹24 lakh. Medicines worth ₹2.45 lakh were also seized for allegedly being stored without the required licence.

Another Amazon facility, BLR7 in Anekal taluk, was also inspected. Authorities seized improperly labelled food products worth ₹19 lakh and expired food products worth ₹13 lakh, taking the total food seizure there to approximately ₹32 lakh. Medicines worth ₹1.57 lakh were additionally seized during the inspection.

The findings highlight the importance of monitoring inventory across large-scale storage networks, particularly as online grocery and quick-commerce platforms increasingly rely on warehouses and dark stores to fulfil orders rapidly.

Instamart Facility Shut in Hoskote

A Swiggy Instamart facility in Hoskote, Bengaluru Rural, emerged as another major focus of the operation. Officials seized expired food products valued at around ₹42 lakh from the facility.

Authorities subsequently shut the facility after reportedly finding unhygienic conditions and violations of provisions under the Food Safety and Standards Act and applicable rules. Officials said their investigation at the facility was continuing, with expired and mislabelled products estimated at around ₹1 crore being examined.

Local Businesses Also Inspected

The crackdown extended beyond major e-commerce companies. At a business in HBR Layout, officials reportedly found expired cashew biscuits, ragi flour, chicken patties, paneer, cookies, nuts, eggs and flour. Food products worth approximately ₹10,000 were seized.

At another establishment in Lingarajapuram, inspectors found expired and near-expiry nutritional products, beverages, chocolates, sweets, ghee, nuts and seeds. The owner reportedly said food products worth around ₹56 lakh were stored at the premises, following which action was taken by the department.

₹1.38 Crore Food Seized

According to the consolidated figures released by authorities, ₹33 lakh worth of food products were seized for incorrect or inadequate labelling, while expired and near-expiry products accounted for approximately ₹1.05 crore. Together, the value of seized food products reached ₹1.38 crore.

Adding the ₹4.02 lakh worth of medicines allegedly stored without licences, the overall value of seized products rises to approximately ₹1.43 crore. Further investigation and legal action are underway.

Wider Food Safety Concerns

The Bengaluru operation reflects increasing scrutiny of the rapidly expanding online grocery and quick-commerce sector. With products moving through multiple warehouses, dark stores and delivery networks, regulators are focusing on whether safety, storage and labelling requirements are being followed throughout the supply chain.

The Karnataka authorities have indicated that inspections will continue, sending a clear message to food businesses and storage operators that expired products, inadequate labelling and poor storage practices can result in enforcement action.

Bengaluru, September 8, 2026: Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration has intensified its crackdown on food safety violations across Bengaluru, seizing expired and improperly labelled food products worth ₹1.38 crore from multiple storage and supply facilities, including facilities linked to Amazon and Swiggy Instamart.
