A late-night LPG cylinder fire in Mumbai\u2019s Dharavi<\/strong> left five people injured, including two young children, after a cylinder caught fire inside a residential room in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar. The incident took place around midnight in Room No. 43 of a ground-plus-two-storey building near Rajiv Gandhi Sports Club on Sion-Dharavi Link Road<\/strong>, triggering panic among residents in the densely populated neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the family, the incident occurred while a gas mechanic had been called to replace an LPG cylinder. Relatives alleged that the cylinder\u2019s pin was damaged during the replacement, causing gas to leak inside the room. They further alleged that, despite the smell of gas, the mechanic attempted to light the stove, after which the gas ignited and caused the fire. These allegations are part of the family\u2019s account, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children Among Those Injured<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The blast and resulting flames injured people inside and around the affected home. Four injured people were taken to Sion Hospital<\/strong>, where they were treated for burn injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The injured included Poonam Jaiswal, 30<\/strong>, who suffered burns to her face and hands; Rohan Gupta, 5<\/strong>, who sustained burns to his hands and legs; Rudra Gupta, 4<\/strong>, who suffered injuries to his chest and both legs; and Parvati Gundedi, 19<\/strong>, who sustained burns to her hands and legs. Hospital officials reported burn injuries ranging from approximately 5% to 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two children were reportedly in a common corridor outside the neighbouring house when the fire broke out. The blast reached the corridor, leaving both children injured. Their presence outside the room illustrates how quickly an LPG-related fire can affect people beyond the immediate location of the cylinder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gas mechanic who was reportedly present during the incident was also allegedly injured. According to the family, he went to Sion Hospital but later left without receiving treatment amid tension at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents Help Contain the Fire<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Residents acted quickly after the blast and attempted to control the flames using buckets of water before firefighters arrived. The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the first call at around 11:45 p.m.<\/strong> and brought the fire under control by approximately 12:10 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire officials said firefighters first switched off the LPG cylinder\u2019s knob before extinguishing the remaining flames. Police, fire brigade personnel and BEST staff were also mobilised following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire brigade subsequently took the LPG cylinder away for examination, while police sealed the affected area during the night. The area was reopened the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigation Underway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are now examining how the cylinder caught fire and whether any safety or handling procedures were violated during its replacement. The allegations made by the family regarding the gas mechanic have not been independently established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with LPG cylinders in Mumbai\u2019s densely populated residential areas. A gas leak in a confined space can quickly create a highly dangerous situation, particularly when an ignition source is introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For residents, the incident serves as a reminder that any suspected LPG leak should be treated as an emergency<\/strong>. Ignition sources should be avoided, and residents should seek professional assistance rather than attempting to troubleshoot a leaking cylinder themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With five people injured and two children among those affected, the Dharavi fire has raised fresh concerns about household LPG safety and emergency preparedness in densely packed neighbourhoods across Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
