The action involved five Bangladeshi transit passengers and a contractual airline ground staff member, according to officials.

The seizure was carried out under an operation internally referred to as “Operation Midnight Goldstrike.” The DRI’s Mumbai Zonal Unit reportedly acted on specific intelligence about a ground staff member allegedly involved in moving smuggled gold out of the airport. Investigators intercepted the staffer as he was leaving the airport premises and conducted a search.

During the search, officials recovered egg-shaped capsules containing 24-carat gold dust concealed in wax form. According to the DRI, seven such capsules were initially recovered from the airline ground staff member. His questioning subsequently led investigators towards other suspected members of the alleged network.

The investigation then led to the interception of five transit passengers who were allegedly connected to the operation. Authorities recovered additional capsules from them, bringing the total seizure to approximately 6.65–6.85 kilograms of foreign-origin gold, depending on the reported accounting of the seizure. The gold was valued at around ₹10.75 crore and was seized under provisions of the Customs Act.

According to investigators, the alleged syndicate used transit passengers travelling between Dubai, Bangkok and Male via Mumbai as part of its smuggling network. The use of transit passengers is believed to have been an important part of the alleged operation, allowing the contraband to move through the airport while attempting to avoid detection by customs and enforcement agencies.

The arrested ground staff member was allegedly working for an airline through a third-party contractual arrangement. Officials suspect that his role involved helping move the smuggled gold beyond the airport and facilitating its handover to another person outside the premises. Investigators are now examining communications, travel details and other evidence to determine the wider structure of the alleged network.

The DRI has also indicated that the investigation is still at an early stage. Officials are attempting to identify the source of the gold, intended recipients and other people allegedly involved in the network. Authorities believe additional members of the syndicate may still be at large, and further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.

The case also highlights the continuing challenge faced by Indian enforcement agencies in preventing gold smuggling through international airports. Gold remains a frequent target for illegal import networks because of its high value and relatively easy portability. Smugglers often attempt to conceal gold in unusual forms or use passengers and intermediaries to move it across borders.

In this case, the recovery of gold dust concealed inside wax-filled capsules has drawn attention to the methods allegedly used by the network. The DRI’s action demonstrates the importance of intelligence-led surveillance at major international transit hubs such as Mumbai airport.

The six accused have been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation, while legal proceedings are underway. Some of the accused have reportedly been remanded to judicial custody. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and trace the alleged financial and logistical links behind the operation.

With the seized gold valued at ₹10.75 crore, the operation represents a significant enforcement action against organised gold smuggling in Mumbai. The DRI is expected to continue its investigation to determine how the alleged network operated and whether more individuals were involved in bringing foreign-origin gold into India.

Mumbai, August 31, 2026: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted an alleged international gold-smuggling network operating through Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, seizing foreign-origin gold worth approximately ₹10.75 crore and arresting six people.
