The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stepped up its crackdown on food safety problems across Mumbai. On August 22 2026 the regulator stopped the food business licence of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) facility in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) which caused the closure of its restaurants and food\u2011and\u2011beverage services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action is part of an inspection drive by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration aimed at enforcing hygiene, food\u2011safety and regulatory standards at restaurants, clubs, canteens and other establishments serving food in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MCA BKC Facility Faces Licence Suspension<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports say that the FDA stopped the food business licence of the MCA BKC facility after an inspection. Because of that the food and beverage work at that place cannot keep going during the time the regulators are looking into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MCA then told its members that all food and drink services and restaurants at the club were shut until the update. The letter said the problem was a ” issue ” but the FDA action was about food safety and hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This news is getting a lot of attention because the MCA facility sits in BKC, a business area in Mumbai that hosts many big corporate offices and schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wider FDA Crackdown Across Mumbai<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stop of the MCA facility happens while the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration is running a food safety campaign in Mumbai. The FDA has looked at famous restaurants, clubs, gymkhanas and other food places as the city raises its checks for food safety rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 21 the FDA stopped the food licence of the Bombay Presidency Radio Club and the registration of Khar Gymkhana because of claimed hygiene, structural and food safety problems. The FDA also stopped the licence of a McDonald\u2019s in Colaba after an inspection that found problems one of them being live cockroaches in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newest FDA push comes after other checks in Mumbai in the last weeks. Earlier the FDA also looked at places like Otters Club, Daily Fresh Bakers, Prince of Wales Restaurant Cafe Sifarish and a Zepto store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focus on Hygiene and Food Safety<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crackdown shows that the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration is watching food safety practices more closely. This includes how food is stored, kitchen cleanliness, pest control keeping equipment in shape and handling ingredients properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier checks in Mumbai found problems. Some places stored food badly. Kept their kitchens dirty. Others had pests. Sold food that was not what it claimed. Some businesses got improvement notices. More serious or unresolved issues led to licence suspensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a restaurant or big kitchen gets a licence suspension it can hurt business badly. Food cannot be. Served until the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration checks that all rules are met and says it is safe to open again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent action at the MCA BKC facility shows that the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration is looking at more than small cafes. It is also checking clubs, school kitchens and other well\u2011known places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulator is focusing more on making sure rules are followed of only reacting to complaints. If a place has problems it may get an improvement notice, another inspection or if needed, a suspension of its food licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
