They did not know if the banks were open or not. This was because the state was mourning for three days after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar passed away. A lot of people in Mumbai and other cities thought the banks would be closed. So they all went to the banks. This caused long lines. Many people had to wait for a time to do their transactions. There were also a lot of rumors on media, about the banks being open or closed. People were talking about Maharashtra banks. Whether Maharashtra banks were working or not. Maharashtra banks were the topic of discussion.

The state government said there would be mourning. So flags were flown at mast and public celebrations were stopped.. The state government did not clearly say what would happen with the banks. This made people confused about what to do. Some people decided not to go to the bank. Other people went to the bank. Found out that the bank was not working like it normally does. The bank had limited things it could do. It was open, for shorter hours. People were unsure what to do because the state government did not clearly say what would happen with the banks. The banks were affected by the mourning just like the flags and the public celebrations.

In Mumbai people were really confused outside the bank branches. Some of the banks were open and working like normal.. Other banks had fewer people going in because people thought it was a holiday. The bank employees, at these places, which are owned by the government and private companies said that just because the state government said we should mourn it does not mean the banks will be closed. The banks will only be closed if the Reserve Bank of India or the main office of the bank says so.

People who work in banks said that banks have a list of holidays that they follow. They tell everyone about the holidays with papers. “When someone important dies the government does things a little differently but banks stay open unless they say it is a holiday ” one of the big bank people said. So the banks did not tell people quickly enough so a lot of people like older people and people who own small businesses were not sure if the banks would be open. Banks are usually open. People were still unsure because they did not get the information on time. The banks follow a holiday calendar. They tell people about it officially but this time it was not clear, to everyone, especially senior citizens and small business owners if the banks would be open or not.

The confusion also affected people who use banking. Online transactions and ATMs were working fine. Many people waited to move their money clear cheques and visit the bank for loans because they were worried it would take longer than usual. Some small business owners in Mumbai areas like Fort and Dadar had problems too because people were not making payments on time due to the uncertainty about when the banks were open. Digital banking users were also concerned, about the delays.

Political analysts said that these kinds of situations show that state administrations and financial institutions need to work better. When a senior leader dies and mourning is declared people usually think that government services should stop, even if they are still actually working. If the government does not explain what is going on away wrong information can spread very quickly especially on social media and messaging groups, like the political analysts and citizens said about the state administrations and financial institutions.

Banks and banking associations are saying that the government should let people know what is going on when there are problems.

The banking associations want the authorities to tell people what to do so they do not have any trouble.

Banking associations think that people should get their information from the banking websites the bank helplines and the verified notifications from the banks.

They do not want people to listen to rumors or things they hear from friends. Instead get information from the official bank sources, like the bank websites and the bank helplines and the verified banking notifications.

Maharashtra is still, in a period of mourning.. The officials want people to know that the banks are working like normal. The Maharashtra officials said that people should call their bank or check the banks website to see if it is open. This way people will know for sure if their bank is closed or open. Maharashtra officials do not want people to just assume that the banks are closed. People of Maharashtra should check with their bank to see what is going on with the bank hours. Maharashtra is going through a time and the officials want to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The episode serves as a reminder that while state mourning is a mark of respect, essential financial services operate under separate regulatory guidelines, making clear communication critical to maintaining public confidence and daily economic activity.

People in Maharashtra were really confused on Thursday.
