From Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to the newly included Coastal Road, 70,065 participants ran for personal goals, podium finishes, and causes close to their hearts.

A Journey of Two Decades

The Tata Mumbai Marathon, first held in 2004 with just 22,000 runners, has steadily grown into one of India’s largest sporting events. This year’s edition saw nearly 5,000 more participants than 2025, with 65,400 runners on the ground and over 3,700 joining virtually. The marathon is as much about elite competition as it is about inclusivity, featuring senior citizens, first-time runners, people with disabilities, and large groups in the Dream Run and Open 10K events.

The Routes and Races

The marathon’s multiple events began from key locations:

Full marathon, elite races, 10K, Dream Run, senior citizens’ runs: flagged off from CSMT.

Half marathon: started from Mahim, looping back through South Mumbai near Bombay Gymkhana.

This year, the Coastal Road joined the race route for the first time, offering participants uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea and Mumbai’s skyline, along with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. While the route was visually stunning, some runners noted it was mentally challenging due to fewer spectators along stretches.

Elite Winners and Local Heroes

Elite runner Tadu Abate from Ethiopia crossed the finish line first in 2:09:55, crediting his strategy and pacing for the victory. “The hills were tough, but after settling into a rhythm halfway, I focused on conserving energy,” Abate said.

Meanwhile, the spirit of Mumbai shone through in stories of first-time runners, veterans, and professionals alike. Mahasweta Ghosh, 47, a professional runner, said, “The crowds and cheerfulness kept us going. The Coastal Road was tough, but seeing people come out to support runners made a huge difference.”

Bengaluru software engineer Guruprasad Shanbag, 34, agreed. “The high fives, cheers, and strangers offering water show the spirit of Mumbai. The elevation and humidity were challenging, but the vibe here is unmatched.”

Weather and Air Quality

Sunday’s early-morning weather was largely favorable:

Colaba: 20.4°C

Santacruz: 18.4°C

Daytime temperatures: 27–28°C, slightly below normal

Air quality, a concern in the days leading up to the marathon, was also relatively moderate. Early-morning AQI readings ranged from 68 at Byculla to 99 at Navy Nagar–Colaba.

The Awaaz Foundation had urged authorities to monitor pollution levels, noting that long periods of deep breathing during running can increase PM2.5 exposure. In response, the BMC and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board deployed five mobile air quality monitoring vans along the route to track PM2.5 and PM10 levels in real time.

Community and Culture Along the Route

The marathon isn’t just a race; it’s a festival. Alongside cheering crowds, runners were treated to:

RPF bands and cultural performances

Awareness campaigns on women’s safety and child sexual abuse, supported by NGOs like Rubaroo

Music, dancing, and interactive squads every few kilometers

Dignitaries spotted on the route included Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Aamir Khan and family, Dino Morea, Canadian runner Andre De Grasse, and Rahul Narvekar, Speaker of the State Assembly.

Medical Preparedness

Safety was a priority, with over 2,400 participants treated during the event and 26 hospitalizations. Most cases involved minor issues like muscle cramps, fatigue, or dehydration, which were promptly managed on course or at nearby hospitals. Organizers reported no casualties this year.

The Mumbai Marathon Experience

As the sun rose and traffic returned to the streets, the city slowly reclaimed its rhythm. But for runners and spectators alike, the marathon left a lasting impression: sore muscles, hoarse voices, and unforgettable memories of a city uniting in celebration of sport, resilience, and community.

The Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026 reminded everyone why it is more than just a race—it’s a festival of fitness, determination, and Mumbai’s indomitable spirit.

From CSMT to Coastal Road: 70,000 Runners Wake Mumbai at Dawn The streets of Mumbai came alive before sunrise on Sunday as the 21st Tata Mumbai Marathon transformed the city into a sea of runners, music, and cheers.
