With the Tata Mumbai Marathon just days away on January 18, concerns over air pollution in the city have resurfaced. Environmental group Awaaz Foundation has urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to take steps to protect the health of runners, volunteers, and spectators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group highlighted that since the beginning of January, Mumbai has experienced haze-like conditions and rising pollution levels, making it crucial to monitor air quality along the marathon route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sumaira Abdulali, founder of Awaaz Foundation, explained the risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cAir quality deteriorates every January due to winter conditions. PM2.5 particles are particularly dangerous because they are inhalable and penetrate deep into the lungs. During a marathon, runners breathe faster, increasing their exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Last year\u2019s monitoring showed PM2.5 levels along the marathon route reaching between 95 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 to over 150 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3, far above the Central Pollution Control Board\u2019s safe 24-hour limit of 60 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3. High PM2.5 levels can cause respiratory stress, especially during long-distance runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nCalls for Early, Route-Specific Monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Awaaz Foundation has requested that the MPCB deploy mobile monitoring vans along the full marathon route several days before the race. They have also urged authorities to share the air quality data publicly and with health officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abdulali added that temporary halts to construction work or other polluting activities along the route could help reduce risks for participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nBMC and MPCB Respond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The BMC has forwarded the complaint for internal action. A senior official said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cAir quality has been hovering around 110 to 114 at several locations, with PM2.5 crossing 200 in areas like Deonar. Mobile monitoring vans are available and can be deployed if required. With proper planning, we are confident levels can be kept below 100.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
MPCB officials highlighted logistical challenges from last year, including traffic restrictions and lack of power supply at monitoring sites, but confirmed they are coordinating with BMC to ensure monitoring this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nMarathon Organisers Outline Safety Measures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Procam International, the event organiser, assured participants that health and safety remain a priority. Neha Kandalgaonkar, vice-president of corporate communications at Procam, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Intensive road cleaning and dust suppression using mist blowers and water sprinklers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Real-time air quality monitoring along the route.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Early-morning scheduling of races to take advantage of cooler temperatures and better air conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- A coastal route with sea breeze for natural ventilation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Comprehensive medical preparedness, with facilities deployed across the course and at the finish line in partnership with Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cWe work closely with BMC and other authorities to create the safest conditions possible for all participants,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
