Popular shopping hubs buzzed with activity as people flocked to buy clothing, jewellery, gifts, decorations, and food items, giving the historic commercial districts a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

Key markets such as Crawford Market, Colaba Causeway, Zaveri Bazaar, Fashion Street, and Bhuleshwar remained crowded throughout the day, with peak congestion observed during afternoon and evening hours. Shop owners reported a sharp increase in sales compared to regular weekdays, driven by year-end shopping, holiday gatherings, and New Year celebrations.

Traders at Crawford Market said demand for fruits, dry fruits, chocolates, and decorative items surged significantly. “This is one of the busiest periods of the year for us. Families are buying in bulk for celebrations at home and parties,” said a long-time vendor. Decorative lights, flowers, and party accessories were among the most sought-after items, adding to the festive mood.

Colaba Causeway, a favourite destination for both locals and tourists, saw brisk business across fashion accessories, footwear, souvenirs, and street-side eateries. Shoppers were seen bargaining enthusiastically, while street performers and food stalls added to the lively ambience. Many tourists visiting Mumbai during the holiday season made it a point to explore the iconic market, contributing to the heavy footfall.

Jewellery markets such as Zaveri Bazaar also experienced a notable rush, with customers purchasing gold and silver ornaments for weddings, festive gifting, and personal use. Jewellers reported steady demand despite fluctuating gold prices, attributing the surge to the auspicious period and upcoming family functions. “Festive sentiment remains strong. People are still willing to invest in jewellery during celebrations,” a jeweller noted.

The increased crowd prompted authorities to step up security and traffic management measures. Mumbai Police deployed additional personnel in crowded market areas to ensure smooth movement and prevent untoward incidents. Traffic police implemented temporary diversions and parking restrictions in select areas to manage congestion, especially during evening hours.

Civic authorities also intensified cleanliness drives and waste management efforts, particularly in markets generating high volumes of packaging waste. Additional garbage collection trips were arranged, and sanitation staff were deployed to maintain hygiene amid the surge in visitors. Public announcements urged shoppers to cooperate by disposing of waste responsibly.

While traders welcomed the festive rush, commuters and pedestrians faced challenges navigating through crowded lanes and narrow streets. Several shoppers advised others to plan visits during non-peak hours to avoid congestion. “The festive vibe is great, but it’s better to come early in the day to avoid long waits and overcrowding,” said a shopper at Fashion Street.

Economists and retail experts view the strong turnout as a positive indicator for local businesses, especially small traders who depend heavily on seasonal sales. With inflationary pressures affecting consumer spending in recent months, the festive footfall has provided a much-needed boost to the retail ecosystem in South Mumbai.

As New Year’s Eve approaches, markets are expected to remain busy, with authorities urging citizens to remain alert, follow safety guidelines, and cooperate with police instructions. Despite the crowds, the festive energy across South Mumbai markets reflects the city’s enduring spirit — blending tradition, celebration, and commerce in the heart of Mumbai.

Markets across South Mumbai witnessed heavy festive footfall on Monday as residents and visitors stepped out in large numbers ahead of the New Year celebrations.
