Serious attempts at stealing jewellery from a jewellery shop in the historic Zaveri Bazaar of Mumbai have been successfully averted after coordinated efforts by some quick-witted police personnel dashed plans of stealing precious ornaments by some suspected culprits. The incident happened at night when this busy jewellery market was relatively empty since it was late and all businesses had closed for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As reported by police officials, the accused was attempting to forcibly open the shutter of a jeweler\u2019s outlet situated within one of the narrow alleys of Zaveri Bazaar. Zaveri Bazaar is known to be among the largest gold bazaars of India, and it is home to hundreds of shops, which conduct business transactions worth substantial amounts on a daily basis. The said locality remains under constant police surveillance due to the nature of businesses operating there, especially at nighttime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The attempt began to unravel when a night patrol team noticed some movement and noise emanating from an area where a shop was closed. On approaching the area, the police detected some damage on the shutter of the closed shop, hence prompting an urgent notification to other patrol teams in the area. Noticing that police were nearby, the would-be thieves attempted to escape but were quickly pursued and arrested in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to police officials, initial investigations reveal that the suspects may have been monitoring this shop for several days. The equipment used to open the shutter was also found at the site, and this suggests that the plan was premeditated. The good thing, however, was that the jewellery and money were not taken, and the owner was immediately notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The senior police officers commended the alertness displayed by the patrolling team, which would have resulted in enormous financial losses had they not acted. “Zaveri Bazaar is a marketplace for valuable goods. If a crime like this had succeeded, its effects would have been severe,” a senior police officer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not the first time when the necessity of night patrolling in business centers, including those where dealing in precious gems and stones is involved, has come into focus. Recently, the Mumbai Police have stepped up protection in the area of Zaveri Bazaar, including other surrounding markets like Kalbadevi, Bhuleshwar, given the approaching end-of-the-year festival season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traders in the area were grateful for the police operation and were relieved that the plot was prevented before any loss was caused. Traders in the jewellery shops trade revealed that most shops in the area had installed CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and hardened shutters, but police presence was needed as a deterrent against theft gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police officials confirmed that efforts are being put in place to question the accused as a means of establishing a possible link between the accused and any possible similar attempts and theft cases in and around Mumbai. The police are also analyzing CCTC footage in a bid to identify possible collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shop owners have been advised to be on their guard and ensure that all security systems are in order. Shop owners have also been urged to coordinate with police stations in their areas if they notice any suspicious behavior. Meetings between police and trade associations are also planned to foster better coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is even as the prevention of this heist has gone ahead to boost the level of faith that traders have in the area, with the said bazaar being the spine of the gems trade in the city of Mumbai. As Mumbai readies to greet the beginning of New Year festivities coupled with increased commercial activity, the police have reiterated their stern vigil in all the major markets.
