A massive fire broke out late Tuesday night at a high-rise residential building in Andheri West, sending the residents into a tizzy and civic authorities into an overdrive. The fire, which, according to reports, originated on one of the middle floors of the building, soon spread smoke across several levels, forcing occupants to flee under difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said fire calls were received around late evening, after which several fire tenders, ambulances, and police teams were rushed to the spot. The firefighters immediately started the rescue operation, giving priority to elderly residents, children, and people stuck on higher floors. More than 40 residents were rescued safely, many of whom were escorted down stairwells as thick smoke made elevators inoperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents described moments of fear as smoke engulfed corridors and staircases within minutes. \u201cThere was sudden darkness and thick smoke. We could barely breathe, said a resident from the 15th floor who was rescued with the help of firefighters using breathing apparatus. Some residents sheltered inside their apartments, while others congregated on balconies waiting for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fire officials classified the incident as a Level-II fire, meaning that it was a serious incident requiring extended manpower. Firefighters used high-pressure water jets and internal hose lines to bring the blaze under control. The operation lasted for several hours as the teams made sure that no residual fire pockets were left and the residents were all present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire might be due to a short circuit, though authorities said the cause would be confirmed after a detailed forensic investigation. The officials also added that the combustible materials kept in common areas might have contributed to the spread of smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many were treated at the site for smoke inhalation, while a few were shifted to nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, which was credited to timely response from emergency services and cooperation at the resident level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The movement of traffic in parts of Andheri West was adversely affected as the narrow approach roads were used by emergency vehicles to reach the building. Mumbai Police mobilised additional personnel to control crowds and kept the passage clear for fire engines and ambulances to pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The civic authorities have announced that a structural safety audit would be conducted on the building before allowing the residents back to their homes. The power supply to the affected wing has been disconnected temporarily. Debris removal will continue all through the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This incident once again highlighted the growing concern over fire safety in high-rise residential buildings across Mumbai. Fire officials have urged housing societies to regularly check electrical systems, keep fire exits clear, and conduct evacuation drills to prevent loss of life during emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BMC administration also urged citizens and building societies to adhere religiously to fire safety norms, including the provision of usable firefighting equipment and easy access to rescue workers. As the investigations go on, both residents and authorities are hoping that some lessons learned will ensure better enforcement of safety regulations and help prevent similar emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
