The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, or BEST, undertaking has intensified bus services on different busy routes in Mumbai in order to deal with the increasing number of commutants during peak times. This has been observed in the wake of rising daily movements in the city, owing to office work, end-year commercial activities, and greater footfall in markets and business centers in the winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per BEST authorities, more buses have been added to routes that have high density linking residential areas with prominent business centers, train stations, as well asMetro routes. Services on routes that cover areas like Andheri, Borivali, Dadar, Kurla, entry points of Thane, as well as South Mumbai, now operate with increasedicia during peak morning and evening periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The passenger data and feedback helped the officials in creating a list of routes that needed immediate attention so that their services could be strengthened. As a large number of offices have opened their doors with regular attendance and educational institutions are operating at full capacity, the buses have been seeing a large number of occupants, especially during peak hours. Commuters have generally received the development positively. Office-going commuters have observed an increase in mean frequency for peak routes, thus relieving congestion. \u201cEarlier, buses in peak hours were packed. Missing one meant a wait of almost an hour. But now, with an increase in the number of buses, travel has become easier,” commented an office-going commuter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drivers and conductors have also been sensitized to facilitate smooth operations during the peak period. BEST officials said that deployment of staff has been done in line with new time schedules to prevent gaps in services. Particular attention is being drawn to discipline at bus stops and following time schedules to prevent bunching of buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, traffic conditions are still a challenge. Even on arterial roads, traffic congestion during peak hours may impact bus punctuality. BEST is taking measures to cooperate with traffic police to give preference to bus flow at selected signals and to prevent illegal parking near bus stops. This should result in better reliability of travel times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The enhanced services are also expected to help in making transport environmentally sustainable. BEST believes it can reduce traffic congestion as well as emissions from vehicles if it gets more people to use bus transport instead of personal vehicles. According to transport analysts, regular services of the kind are needed to induce people in Mumbai to shift to the public transport system since Mumbai has limited roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apart from peak-hour reinforcement, BEST is also keeping track of weekend travel patterns. With increased foot traffic in shopping centers, beaches, and picnic spots, there are some routes that will be revised according to the demands of travel for leisure activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking into the future, BEST has plans to further modernize its fleet and enhance the quality of its services. Projects such as the provision of real-time tracking of the buses, enhanced routes, and the introduction of more electric buses will help in improving the passenger experience.
