The Mumbai Traffic Police have stepped up checking of vehicles at prominent junctions in the city during peak hours in a bid to enhance road safety. The special traffic drive has been launched on major roads in a bid to control the rising traffic as the city records heightened movements of people before the end of the year. The move aims to ensure road safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per traffic officials, the inspections are being carried out in the peak hours of the morning and evening, which witness maximum rush of commuters. The traffic points that have been shortlisted in South Mumbai, Western Suburbs, and the Eastern Corridors are those which are prominent in traffic flow as well as in terms of past violations. The traffic police are checking violators in respect to signal jumping, meandering, overspeeding, riding without helmets, and driving without licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our mission is not only punishment but deterrent action,” said a traffic department official. “By making presence felt at major junctions, drivers are more likely to adhere to traffic rules and behave in a less risky manner.” Senior government officials stated that Mumbai\u2019s transport infrastructure experiences huge pressure during peak times because of both private and government vehicles, along with pedestrian traffic. With road construction taking place in various parts of Mumbai and due to tourists, following traffic discipline has now emerged as an important task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drive operates alike, with a mix of manual observation as well as technology-based monitoring. More traffic police personnel have been deployed at all critical intersections. Additionally, the use of CCTV cameras and e-challan technology has been employed to recognize violations. Officials have confirmed that the application of CCTV cameras reduces the possibility of an altercation and makes the entire issue more transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traffic police are also linking enforcement efforts with awareness activities. Messages are being disseminated through social media platforms, radio, and electronic boards erected along the roads to remind road users to respect road lanes, wear protective gear, and refrained from using mobile devices while driving. A special focus is also being made for two-wheelers and truckers, as they are identified as major culprits for traffic violations during peak times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, according to officials, the operation also seeks to provide a smooth flow of traffic for public service vehicles and ambulances. Through the removal of vehicles parked ILLEGALLY around junctions, taking control of vehicles occupying TURNING LANES, traffic cops seek to eliminate congestion, a major cause of long queues during peak hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving forward, the traffic department is set to conduct further strict checks in the coming weeks, especially during the approaching New Year celebrations. The increased flow of traffic late at night is expected. Authorities have asked for cooperation between the enforcement teams and the citizens. While Mumbai maintains the delicate balance of growth with mobility issues, the need for stricter traffic enforcement during peak times is what this city now needs in order to have smoother roads.
