The repair, which is part of a planned infrastructure maintenance initiative-aimed at addressing wear and tear caused by heavy traffic, monsoon damage, and ageing road surfaces-is aimed at improving the quality of roads and providing safer conditions for travel.

The BMC has started repairing various major arterial and internal roads in South Mumbai, including stretches that see high vehicle density throughout the day. Officials said resurfacing and repair of potholes and strengthening of road layers are being done in phases to avoid largescale disruption. However, traffic diversions as a temporary measure have been implemented to ensure that work gets safely and efficiently executed.

Traffic diversions have been made in consultation with the traffic police to regulate movement of vehicles through the affected stretches. One side of the road has been closed to traffic in certain locations, where repairs are being carried out, diverting traffic to parallel routes. In places, lane restrictions have been imposed, slowing down the traffic flow, especially during morning and evening peak hours.

The latest diversions, especially around commercial hubs, office zones, and residential clusters, have lengthened the road time for commuters across South Mumbai. Taxis, private vehicles, and buses have borne the brunt of this diversion. The extended travel time has forced several commuters to either advance or delay their journey schedules and, in turn, take other routes. Traffic police personnel are deployed at major junctions to guide motorists and avert congestion at diversion points.

Civic officials justified the reason for repair work on grounds of providing better driving experience and minimizing complaints on potholes, uneven surfaces, and waterlogging. Some roads in South Mumbai witness unhindered traffic all year round with the result that their surface would wear off faster in a short time. This year, repairs are expected to facilitate durability and reduce patchwork in the coming months.

Public transportation services, including bus routes operating through affected areas, have also been temporarily rerouted. Transport authorities have advised passengers to check route updates and allow extra travel time while commuting. Announcements and on-ground signage have been placed to help commuters learn about route changes and diversion points.

Residents close to the repair zones have received mixed impacts. Whereas many welcomed the long-term benefits of improved road conditions, some complained about noise and dust and restricted access to buildings during the work period. Civic authorities have stated that contractors have been instructed to follow safety and dust-control measures, including barricading work zones and carrying out water sprinkling to reduce airborne dust.

In order to avoid inconvenience, the BMC has planned some of the repair work at night when the volume of traffic is lesser. “Because of night-time work, the progress is faster while congestion during the day reduces,” officials said. But stretches that require daytime work due to safety and technical reasons have to be done so.

The traffic police advised motorists to abide by the diversion signage, avoid affected routes where possible, and be cooperative with personnel on the ground. Drivers have also been encouraged to use navigation apps that can help them identify less congested alternative routes. Illegal parking near the work zones has been discouraged by authorities, as this could further slow traffic movement and create safety risks.

Civic officials said that the repair work was being closely monitored to see that it gets completed on time. Engineers are doing regular inspections to maintain quality standards and avoid delays in the work. BMC sources said that after the current phase of repairs is completed, normal traffic movement will be restored in a phased manner and barricades will be removed in phases. The infrastructural upgradation of South Mumbai is in process, and the authorities are in need of public patience and cooperation. Authorities claimed that temporary traffic diversions will cause short-term inconvenience, but improved road conditions would lead to safer, smoother, and more efficient travel in the long run. Commuters have been urged to stay informed through official advisories and plan their journeys accordingly until the repair work is concluded.

Road repair and resurfacing in parts of South Mumbai have temporarily diverted road traffic, thus affecting the day-to-day travel of car drivers and public transport users.
