The drive has been launched in response to several grievances related to road conditions reported by commuters from time to time.

According to civic authorities, the need to fix the potholes has also been prioritized on major arterials that have large volumes of traffic flow. Such roads are the ones that usually have business and residential areas, railway stations, and highways. This is mainly because such road spots experience a large amount of wear and tear.

Engineers of BMC have found several stretches that need immediate attention, especially after recent inspections. This repair process involves filling potholes, resurfacing depressed stretches, repairing road edges, and drainage to avoid the accumulation of water. It was reported that the reappearing of potholes in the road is one of the main reasons for the drainage problem, and corrective measures are being implemented.

Special teams have been deployed in different areas of the city to perform repairs during off-peak hours to cause minimum disruption to commuters. Night and early morning shifts have been arranged on major roads to avoid disrupting traffic during working hours. Traffic police are working in collaboration with city officials to ensure that vehicles flow smoothly around working areas.

The civic body has also directed the contractors to strictly follow quality parameters while implementing the road repairs. According to officials, poor work has previously led to temporary remedies that tended to deteriorate prematurely. This time around, the focus is on using materials that will last longer and appropriate compaction techniques that will help maintain lasting road surfaces. Routine checks will be performed by authorities to ensure the quality is not compromised by the contractors.

Car drivers, particularly commuters on two-wheeled vehicles, have welcomed the decision, claiming that potholes are some of the key factors that cause accidents and damage to vehicles. Some commuters have argued that the presence of potholes not only slows down the flow of traffic but also results in higher fuel expenditure. Pedestrians also find it challenging to walk on the roads where there are potholes.

Officials at the BMC explained that the ongoing repairs are a part of a larger plan to maintain the roads, which will continue in the coming weeks. Alongside the patchwork jobs, the municipal authority has been evaluating long-term solutions to address the problem through the complete repair of badly damaged stretches as well as changes in the design of the roads. Areas that experience potholes repeatedly have been analyzed to assess structural issues pointing to the base material, trenches, or infiltration of water.

Public feedback has become an important factor in the repair movement. Citizens are urged to point out the locations of potholes through citizen helpline numbers and other complaint websites. Authorities believed that early reporting of such damages will enable faster action and prevent smaller road problems from escalating into grave situations. Special action teams are formed to deal with emergency feedback, including critical road conditions near crossing points and educational and medical road zones.

Nonetheless, some residents complained about frequent digging operations conducted by utility companies, which in many cases damage repaired roads. To address such concerns, officials from civic bodies claimed there has been an improvement in coordination with utility departments so that disruption of road repairs through digging is not allowed. Permissions for digging associated with road repairs are under close observation, and the responsible departments will be forced to mend damaged roads.

The current repair work will also help in alleviating congestion that occurs as a result of vehicles braking or turning in order to avoid potholes. This is because smoother road surfaces optimize traffic flow and prevent bottlenecks and accidents. Given the level of traffic in Mumbai and its outdated infrastructure, officials have explained that maintenance work on roads must be done on a continuous basis. It seems that while the current repair campaign will be a temporary solution for motorists, it will provide a good foundation for future maintenance practices. As work continues on the major arterial roads, the municipal authority has appealed to road-users to display patience and work in tandem with the road experts as they work on the repairs of the road. This is part of the civic body’s initiative to improve the road safety conditions of the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has launched massive pothole filling work on several important arterial roads in Mumbai to improve road safety and make the flow of traffic better in view of increasing pressure on road commuters on a regular basis.
