Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department, has warned of high tidal waves and possibilities of water entering the low-lying areas of the coastal regions of Mumbai.

According to reports, the high tides are a part of a normal lunar cycle. However, the tidal activity is being closely watched due to the prevailing weather conditions. The tides above the danger level may raise the chances of floods. Moreover, evening tides along with winds or rain can be problematic for the city. As a precautionary measure, disaster management plans have been activated in the city.

The high tide areas like Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu Beach, Dadar Chowpatty, Worli Sea Face, and Bandra Bandstand are also being closely monitored. The BMC authorities have asked people not to gather near the shore, rocks, and promenades, especially when there is high tide. Barriers have also been placed in susceptible areas, which do not allow people to move close to the seashore.

Fishing boats have been given a stern warning not to enter the Arabian Sea during the alert phase. The fisheries department has also been warning local fishing units not to operate until sea conditions normalize. This is because rough currents and huge waves pose a severe risk to small fishing boats, and there have been incidents in the past where warnings were ignored, leading to human life and property loss.

Emergency squads, such as the Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and ward disaster squads, have been put on standby mode. The control rooms are working round-the-clock to act swiftly to any situation such as waterlogging, coastal flooding, or people stranded near the coastal areas. High-capacity pumps are ready to tackle situations related to seawater entry in some of the coastal residential areas.

The civic authority has also appealed to both visitors and local residents not to make the high tide a show to behold. This has been happening in the previous years where many onlookers have gathered alongside roads that face the seas during the tides to witness the wave crashes. This has ended up compromising the safety of many onlookers who might find themselves being swept away by a rogue wave.

The traffic police have been notified about how to coordinate traffic flow on roads bordering the coastline in cases of spray or accumulated water. In emergency cases, roads might need to be shut down temporarily. Citizens who live along the coastline are advised to secure items that are not tied down, ensure that drainage points are not clogged, and inform the authorities in case of water intrusion.

It was made clear by meteorologists that the matter of high tide is natural in itself, but it can be further exacerbated by other environmental issues such as rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. Being a densely populated region with a long coastline, Mumbai still faces extreme vulnerability in such matters.

The BMC has appealed to citizens to get only authenticated reports and refrain from spreading rumors and unauthentic information through social media. Reports will be issued from time to time to update citizens on the tide timings, changes in weather, and other safety notifications. Citizens can also seek help from the civic body helpline and disaster management control numbers. Even as Mumbai finds ways to deal with challenges that come with each change of season along its coasts, there was a renewed commitment to protecting lives and property. It is significant that this warning about high tide comes at a time that highlights how Mumbai is so closely associated with the sea.

A high tide warning has been issued for the coastal regions of Mumbai, and people are advised to exercise caution as there may be a substantial rise in sea levels in the next 24 to 48 hours.
