This has resulted in a high level of alertness of the security personnel operating in one of the busiest airports in the country.

According to reports, the threat input was received by the central and state security agencies, and following this, the standard operating procedures were initiated. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the organization responsible for airport security, increased its presence in the domestic and international terminals. More security personnel were posted at the entry points, boarding points, baggage scan areas, and sensitive areas in the airport premises.

Passengers arriving at the airport took longer at security screening whenever there was frisking and screening of their luggage. There was additional screening of hand luggage and containers brought by passengers, as well as vehicles accessing the airport terminals. Passengers were warned by airport authorities to arrive at the airport sufficiently ahead of their flight times in case flight time rescheduling occurs at the last minute.

It was, however, clarified that no incident or breach had been noticed pertaining to the threat warning that had been received. “All preventive measures are in place. There is no cause for panic, but passengers are requested to cooperate with security personnel,” said a senior CISF official. Flight services were not affected despite the enhanced security checks. There were no reports of any flight cancellations.

The airport in Mumbai, handling a huge passenger flow of a million domestic and foreign travelers every month, is categorized in a High Security Area. Threat input, irrespective of its nature and intensity, prompts cautionary measures. The security forces adopt a layered system, with intelligence checks, ground-level presence, and round-the-clock surveillance by CCTVs and patrol services.

The airport management is reported to have liaised closely with CISF, Mumbai Police, as well as intelligence agencies, to ensure a smooth operation of the security measures. Bomb squads were placed on standby, while random checks were also carried out in public spaces such as arrival terminals, parking areas, as well as employee entry points. Dog squads were also used for surveillance.

The presence of extra security measures had a direct effect on the movement of passengers, especially during peak times. This is because passengers had to queue at the terminal entry gates, and they are advised to make sure they have their IDs with them in order to ensure smooth screening processes.

Observers pointed out that the kind of security tightening, while not very convenient, helps to ensure potential threats are averted: “Airports always remain sensitive targets, and security forces are under constant pressure to be vigilant.”

A vast number of passengers showed an understanding of the current situation, though others were concerned with the time and congestion. “It took longer than usual to enter the terminal, but safety is paramount,” expressed one passenger taking an inland flight. Airline companies also recommended passengers to check in online, wherever possible, and adhere to baggage requirements.

Mumbai Police began patrolling heavily in the vicinity of airports as well as on major routes and public transportation points. Control over traffic flow prevented congestion generated by prolonged checking of vehicles. It was confirmed that emergency response squads were on standby in case of any emergency.

By the late afternoon, it had been stated by the authorities that the security cover would remain tight until an evaluation of the threat input is made. Agencies are dealing with the inputs and will take necessary decisions subsequently. This event has reiterated the need for effective security systems to be in place in strategic locations, including airport sites, to prevent any potential threat to the safety of air travelers. Although there was no threat to the safety of the passengers, the government reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of all passengers through vigilance and preparedness. As Mumbai airport remains on high security alert, authorities have assured that all possible measures are being put in place to ensure normal functioning while keeping the safety and security of passengers and staff in mind.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport or CSMIA in Mumbai has strengthened its security measures after a threatening input was received by the concerned security agencies.
