A large fire erupted in Mumbai’s Andheri MIDC area on Tuesday, leaving workers and residents in a state of panic. Black smoke billowed into the air, and the fire could be noticed from a distance of several kilometers. It led to a speedy response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per the preliminary report, the fire incident broke out at the industrial unit located inside the MIDC complex, which comprises several factories and offices of companies working with chemicals, electronics, and manufacturing goods. Fire tenders were immediately rushed to the location after the fire incident was reported early in the day. Fire department officials have since declared the incident to be a major fire incident based on the nature of the fire due to the highly inflammable goods present in the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Witnesses reported incidences of chaos resulting from the quick engulfment of the industrial area by fire. Office employees promptly evacuated their structures, while the nearby offices closed their operations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advisory recommended that citizens in the vicinity stay indoors, with closed windows, until the air quality improves. Teams of the pollution control board were also dispatched to check the toxicity levels of the air in the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local train services on the Western and Harbour Lines were not cancelled, although commuter trains were late due to road diversions and congestion near the location of the incident. Offices in the Andheri East business area gave their staff the option to leave early or work from home due to the emergency situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the fire department, it has not yet been ascertained why the fire broke out. Preliminary reports suggest a possible short circuit or flammable substances stocked inside the unit, but a forensic analysis of the incident would be done once the fire is doused completely. The authorities would also check if safety standards and fire safety practices at the industrial unit are in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Andheri MIDC was a witness to several instances of fire outbreak in the past few years, thereby causing concern about industrial security, storage of dangerous materials, and preparedness. Experts in urban areas had warned earlier that aged infrastructure, congested complexes, and lack of stringent measures for fire-security norms are a danger to the industrial zones of Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As firefighting and cooling efforts extended into the day, authorities are assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to contain the situation. BMC and fire department officials have also clarified that a complete analysis of safety measures in the MIDC area would be done only after the completion of this incident.
