This revelation has been made available by a Right to Information (RTI) application, which has brought to light the irregularities on the part of telephone companies, as well as property owners.

Reports state that, as per RTI, these mobile towers are set up illegalfully without taking necessary permissions from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and other concerned departments. Most of these illegal mobile towers have been erected on residential, educational, as well as commercial, buildings, giving rise to concerns regarding health, safety, as well as stability.

Civic activists reported that, despite numerous complaints from the residents, no concrete step seems to have been taken against the violators. In fact, not only have such illegal constructions violated norms pertaining to construction and town planning, but they have also been depriving the concerned government body of official revenues in terms of license fees and taxes.

The inhabitants living close to such towers are concerned about the possibility of being exposed to radiation. Although government regulatory bodies state that the effects of radiation emanating from mobile towers are within set safety standards, citizens believe that unauthorized mobile towers are not regularly checked for such effects, which pose a danger.

The NMMC officials have accepted the findings and said that the municipal body has already started the process of verification of the documents zone-wise. Notices are likely to be served to the owners of the unauthorised towers to take necessary permissions within a specified time, failing which the structure would be demolished, along with a penalty. In some instances, the disconnection of power supply to the illegal towers has been considered.

The problem has once again brought into the limelight the lack of coordination between telecommunication regulators, the concerned local authority, and the law enforcement agency. The need for a transparent approval mechanism, along with regular audits, has been emphasized by urban planners to avoid similar violations on such a large scale in the future. Navi Mumbai, which is still developing as a prominent residential as well as commercial destination, is set to face stricter regulations in order to maintain a balance between connectivity and safety, as projected by experts.

The latest revelation has caused a great deal of apprehension in Navi Mumbai, following which it has been revealed that there are 216 illegal mobile telephone towers in different nodes of the city.
