According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, an explosion of a gas cylinder inside a residential building in Goregaon (West) early Tuesday morning triggered panic among residents and left three people injured. The incident occurred around 7:15 AM inside a small room of a ground-plus-two structure located in a densely populated lane of Motilal Nagar – a locality known for compact housing clusters and narrow bylanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preliminary investigations revealed that the blast was caused by leakage from an LPG cylinder used for cooking. Residents said a loud bang-like sound followed by flames emanating from one of the homes led to immediate chaos as people rushed out of their rooms. The three injured \u2014 two women and one elderly man \u2014 were inside the affected unit at the time of the blast. They received burn injuries of varying degrees and were immediately taken to the civic-run Cooper Hospital. All three, doctors have stated, are stable, though one of them is under observation because of moderate burns on the arms and face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fire officials reached the site within minutes of being informed. The emergency deployment included two fire engines, one water tanker, and one ambulance. Due to prompt intervention by firefighters as well as proactive neighbors, the fire was confined before it could spread to other units. Residents spoke of moments of fear as they scrambled to safety. Some tried to rescue what little belongings they could, while others worked to get injured neighbors out for help. Local youth also helped firefighters by clearing space so that equipment would have access and guided emergency vehicles through the narrow lanes. According to residents, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are practically unknown in such older buildings, thus further creating vulnerability in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fire officials inspected the structure after the fire was out to make sure it had not suffered significant damage. The blast partially collapsed a partition wall inside the room where the blast occurred and left the ceiling scorched, but it did not affect the overall structural integrity of the building. The civic authorities have asked the occupants of the damaged unit to stay elsewhere temporarily until repair\/restoration work is completed in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The accident has brought back the debate on LPG safety in the city’s older areas, with gas leakage leading to frequent incidents because of worn-out regulators, not well-maintained stoves, and cramped cooking spaces without proper ventilation. The fire officials asked residents to check on the cylinder connections frequently, replace outdated rubber tubes, and ensure adequate flow of air to avoid explosion-like situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local civic leaders also spoke of the dire need for creating awareness about fire safety, particularly in the low-income group settlements where the households mostly use older, unserviced equipment due to costs. Many residents expressed that even though the government legally requires regular safety inspections, they seldom get enforced in sprawling residential pockets like Motilal Nagar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the injured persons are still recuperating, the fire brigade has recorded the incident and will submit a detailed report after a technical assessment. The police have also recorded statements from eyewitnesses and the involved family to gain a better understanding of what occurred prior to the explosion. For now, authorities have said the situation is under control and there is no further threat to the neighbourhood.
