A major fire at a densely populated chawl in Ghatkopar East left six people injured on Monday afternoon, with two reported to be in critical condition. Fire brigade officials who responded to the emergency said that they sent four fire engines, two jumbo tankers, and an ambulance to the site. Despite all these problems, the team managed to confine the blaze in 40 minutes and prevented it from spreading to nearby structures. Electrical malfunction remains the probable cause, though officials are investigating if illegal extensions, unsafe wiring, or overloaded circuits contributed to the incident. Sai Nagar, like many chawl clusters across Mumbai, is made up of decades-old buildings that often lack modern fire safety equipment, well-marked exits, or functional extinguishers. Residents have repeatedly complained about the structural vulnerabilities of the area, but upgrading efforts have been sluggish due to bureaucratic delays and financial constraints among low-income families.
The incident has brought back the focus on fire safety in Mumbai’s old housing settlements. According to urban planners and experts on safety, lakhs of people stay in chawls that need immediate audits and retrofitting to bring them up to modern standards of safety. This would involve installation of fire alarms, replacement of ageing electrical wiring, community training sessions on response to fire, and better access routes for emergency vehicles.
Local political representatives paid a visit to the site soon after the fire was contained and promised assistance for affected families. All of them continued to reassure residents that compensation would be arranged, besides safety inspections of the chawl.
