Mumbai, 18 November 2025 \u2013 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has floated a tender worth around \u20b99.64 crore to build a 325-metre stretch of promenade between Lotus Jetty and Baroda Palace in a major step toward improving the city\u2019s waterfront infrastructure. This will shut a long-pending gap in the promenade along the western coastline of Mumbai and ensure continuous access to pedestrians, joggers, and tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The continuous walkway, when completed, will stretch 7.5 kilometres from Priyadarshani Park near Marine Lines to J.K. Kapoor Chowk near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The gap has long disrupted the city\u2019s scenic promenade network, forcing residents to take detours along busy roads, and limiting access to some of Mumbai\u2019s most scenic waterfront areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to BMC officials, the inordinate delay in bridging this gap was due to CRZ clearances. These obstacles were overcome five months ago, after which the municipal corporation began the tender process. \u201cThe BMC is committed to enhancing public spaces in Mumbai. Closing this gap will improve safety, accessibility and overall experience for people using the promenade,\u201d said a senior BMC official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project was part of an elevated walkway to be built with appropriate safety barriers, landscaping, seating, and lighting facilities. As urban planners pointed out, the design will integrate with the existing promenade, with durability against seasonal monsoon conditions. This new stretch will not only enhance connectivity but also present a better aesthetic and safe environment for the residents and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move has been welcomed by local residents and recreational groups. \u201cWe frequently take walks along the promenade, but this gap is a real nuisance, forcing detours through the crowded streets. When this is completed, it will be much safer and more pleasant for everyone,\u201d said Meera Joshi, a Worli resident. Tourists and fitness enthusiasts will also benefit as the unbroken stretch will allow longer walks and jog routes on the city\u2019s scenic western waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BMC has invited a tender in which interested contractors would be required to complete the work within six months from the commencement of construction. However, there are possibilities of delays due to disruptions during the monsoon or any shortage of labor or procedural problems. Yet, the departments are hopeful of completion on time as this is a very key infrastructure and crucial to several plans of Mumbai’s urban development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Analysts in urban development also present the bigger perspective on Mumbai’s network of promenades. The pedestrian-friendly walkways would promote walking and cycling, reduce dependence on motorized transportation, and alleviate congestion of traffic along the coasts. Filling the gap, the BMC is also reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, filling in the promenade gap is bound to increase business for both the locals and tourists. Cafes and exercise groups, as well as street vendors along the path, will benefit from increased patrons, while the cultural and recreational events can now hold their activities on a continuous part of the seafront. Environmentalists, though, have called on authorities to ensure construction does not violate ecological standards and disrupt coastal biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
