It includes Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, as unseasonal showers continue to lash parts of the Konkan region. For citizens, the weather department has asked them to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas which are prone to waterlogging during intense spells.

This sudden change in weather has caught the residents off guard, as November is usually the transition time to drier winter conditions. The meteorologists, however, attribute the showers to the formation of a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, together with moisture-laden winds blowing inland. These systems are expected to bring intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Unseasonal Showers Disrupt Daily Life

Incessant light to moderate rain lashed several parts of the city, including Andheri, Dadar, Kurla, and Chembur, early Tuesday morning. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded measurable precipitation overnight, while the Colaba station reported brief spells accompanied by gusty winds.

Commuters faced minor disruptions as wet roads and water accumulation slowed traffic in some areas. Suburban train services — the city’s lifeline — remained largely unaffected, though authorities have advised travelers to check real-time updates during peak hours.

The sudden rains have caused more concern for the local businessmen and street vendors operating their businesses outdoors. “We usually pack up our rain gear by October,” said a food stall owner in Bandra. “But this year, the rains just won’t stop.”

Forecast by IMD and Regional Impact

As the IMD forecast explains, Mumbai and adjoining coastal areas are very likely to get cloudy skies with light rain; occasional heavy spells are predicted until Wednesday. Indeed, this warning includes not only the city but also Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts.

IMD officials attributed the unseasonal rainfall to the combined effect of cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea coupled with western disturbances moving across northern India. The combined effect of these weather systems prolonged monsoon-like conditions beyond the usual timelines.

“Yellow alert signals that moderate rainfall may temporarily affect traffic or low-lying areas but is unlikely to cause much disruption,” an IMD scientist said. “We advise the citizens to remain cautious and plan their travel accordingly.”

It has also warned the fishermen not to venture into the sea as rough weather and strong winds are expected along the Konkan coast. The department has called for coastal residents to stay updated on further developments and avoid risky activities in the shoreline area.

City Preparedness and Advisory

The BMC has alerted the disaster management teams in view of the possibility of waterlogging and tree fall incidents. Pumping stations in the flood-prone areas in Sion, Parel, and Kurla have been switched on, and civic engineers have been directed to ensure proper drainage flow.

In a public advisory, the BMC urged residents to:

Avoid traveling through flooded roads or underpasses.

Keep the electronic and valuable items moisture-free.

Monitor IMD and BMC updates on rainfall and transport.

Report the incident to PGE through 1916 for fallen trees or power outage.

It also assured that the major drains and nullahs were cleaned earlier in preparation for the monsoon, which could help minimize flooding if rainfall intensifies.

A Weather Pattern Worth Watching

Meteorologists have been noticing, for the past few years, a spurt in unseasonal rainfall in western India, which they connect with climate variability and warming of sea surface temperatures. According to them, the Arabian Sea has shown more cyclone activity and convection patterns even after the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.

While these rains are certainly not an uncommon feature on a micro scale, environmentalists view such sporadic rain spells as indicative of larger changes in India’s climate system. “What used to be a clearly defined season is now increasingly becoming more and more unpredictable,” said Dr. Aparna Iyer, a climate researcher. “We are finding rainfall events stretched into November and even December, which does affect agriculture, infrastructure, and city life.

Looking Ahead

The IMD expects the current spell of rain to taper off by late Wednesday, after which skies are likely to clear, resulting in a slightly cooler temperature. However, weather experts have warned that more localized rain events might occur at irregular intervals as sea temperatures remain high. For now, Mumbaikars are advised to stay updated with weather alerts, carry umbrellas while stepping out, and remain alert to potential disruptions. The showers have been a relief from pollution and humidity, but also a stark reminder of the city’s susceptibility to sudden changes in weather. With two days of rainfall still expected in Mumbai, citizens and authorities are keeping their fingers crossed that the rain showers remain mild and manageable as they continue to watch the skies.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and adjoining districts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall over the next couple of days.
