Mumbai, Oct 29 \u2014 A shocking revelation has emerged in Mumbai after a concealed camera was found in a private resort room on the outskirts of the city, evoking mass outrage and calls for tighter surveillance and privacy legislation. The camera, discovered hidden within an air freshener unit, was found by a young couple who had rented out the property at the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per police officials of the Malad Police Station, the couple spotted a weak blinking light from the wall-mounted machine late at night on Saturday. When they took a closer look, they discovered a small camera lens and immediately informed the management of the hotel. The couple also made a video recording of the device and posted it with the authorities, prompting a rapid police reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An FIR has been filed under Sections 354C (voyeurism) and 509 (insult to modesty) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as corresponding sections of the Information Technology Act,” a top police officer confirmed. “We have confiscated the concealed camera, DVR device, and other monitoring gadgets for forensic tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initial investigation reveals that the camera might have been set up several weeks ago, recording several guests unknowingly. The resort management staff, including maintenance personnel and the manager, are being interrogated to identify responsibility. “We are not excluding the possibility of an insider’s role,” the investigating officer stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident took place at Sea View Holiday Resort, one of the holiday resorts near Madh Island, which tends to draw families, couples, and visitors on weekends. Upon the revelation, a number of guests checked out of their rooms on spot, and the resort has been temporarily closed pending investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mumbai Police’s Cyber Cell has also joined the investigation to track where the video could have been stored or relayed. The investigators are investigating if the recordings were placed on any websites or stored on local devices. Authorities have also approached the Maharashtra Cyber Department to provide data recovery and to check if the network of secret cameras expanded to other rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police have submitted the seized devices to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina for testing, and the results are expected within a week. Sources indicate that the data card in the concealed camera has a number of gigabytes of video content, possibly days or weeks worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the investigation goes on, the case is a chilling reminder of the growing threat to individual privacy in public and private domains. Cyber specialists have told travelers to conduct quick scans with mobile apps that find disguised cameras by infrared or network scanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
